michmike2 Posted June 23, 2016 #1 Share Posted June 23, 2016 We already have a trip booked on Noordam in Sept (land/sea) and decided to try a rear facing balcony for the first time, so we should be in position to see what is going on on both sides of the ship. Now some friends have decided to join us. Any advice as to which side of the ship they should get a cabin on in order to maximize their sightseeing. We are doing the land portion first, so will be joining the ship in seward and heading back to Vancouver w/ stops in Haines, Juneau and Ketchikan. Thanks in advance. jhsocal Posted June 23, 2016 #2 Share Posted June 23, 2016 Going this direction the Port side will face land. To maximize sightseeing better to spend time on a deck where they can move to either side, , during daylight hours.

You either have scenery on both sides during fjord/glacierbay passages or none at all during sea passage. In front of glaciers, the captain will slowly swing the ship so all sides will have the view. Indeed going out on deck, on top, promenade, front deck, or inside in crowsnest/LIDO will be the best option no matter what cabin location you have. We did both south and northbound back to back on the Zaandam with the above mentioned experience. Enjoy your cruise, it will be fantastic.
Krazy Kruizers Posted June 23, 2016 #4 Share Posted June 23, 2016 You won't see much when the ship is sailing. MOST times when the ship is in port, the port side faces land. For the glaciers, we have noticed that most captains have the port side face the glacier the longest. But on this day you will really want to be out on the deck to move around and see everything. Rare TiogaCruiser Posted June 23, 2016 #5 Share Posted June 23, 2016 (edited) For where you are going most places the channels are narrow enough there will be scenery on both sides. You might want to be up early for the sail ins- especially to Haines. (Lynn Canal) Just reread your post. In September much of your transit time will be in the dark. Been there, done that. catl331 Posted June 23, 2016 #6 Share Posted June 23, 2016 Other than the days near the glaciers, I saw nothing. Someone thought they saw the tail of a whale. I sat in the Crow's Nest often searching and searching. Happy Hour did not make it easier to see things!

We totally agree. Our cabin was on the port side and most of the time we could see land from the balcony. We spent the time in Glacier Bay up on deck. In port you're surrounded by beautiful scenery everywhere you look. To KrazyKruisers - we took almost identical photos of the floats of sea otters in Glacier Bay as your avatar. It was a glorious day!! Edited June 23, 2016 by summersigh
