Rotterdam Posted July 1, 2016 #1 Share Posted July 1, 2016 In the NY Times there was reference that the # of people that had contracted ZEKA had recently visited the Dominican Republic...has anyone else have knowledge of this?
Rare geoherb Posted July 1, 2016 #2 Share Posted July 1, 2016 (edited) Here's what the CDC says about Zika in the Dominican Republic: http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices/alert/zika-virus-dominican-republic I saw a report that the majority of Zika cases in NYC were linked to travel to the Dominican Republic. As a man, I worry more about Chikungunya than I do about Zika since the symptoms for men appear to be much worse. With Zika, the major concern is birth defects. If you're traveling to a location where there are these diseases, take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. keithm Posted July 2, 2016 #3 Share Posted July 2, 2016 In the NY Times there was reference that the # of people that had contracted ZEKA had recently visited the Dominican Republic...has anyone else have knowledge of this? It's starting to crop up on many of the Caribbean islands(especially those that get a lot of rain)I'd say if you're a woman planning to get pregnant(or who currently are)I'd avoid the area all together. Other than that bring some bug spray. We did this last Feb. on our Princess trip. Only in Costa Maya did I notice mosquitos(I got bit several times)No issues, except the itching(as with all mosquitos).

Nanobot Posted July 4, 2016 #5 Share Posted July 4, 2016 When in the DR you are also in an area where you may catch malaria; particularly near the Haiti side of the country as Haiti cannot afford the same level of anti-mosquito efforts as the DR.
