headhunterke Posted July 16, 2016 #1 Share Posted July 16, 2016 http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2016/07/16/faa-bans-flights-between-us-and-turkey/87182548/ With immediate effect, the FAA has banned all direct flights between the US and Turkey after the coup that was attempted on Friday. This current measure will be in effect until August, 15 and will then be reviewed and even possibly extended. If there's anybody taking such flights, be sure to get you rebooked as soon as possible. purduemom1 Posted July 17, 2016 #2 Share Posted July 17, 2016 Are there any US airlines flying into Turkey? Maybe private jets? According to the article, the ban applies to US airlines but it looks like Delta, United, and American don't fly into IST. They will book you on a code share. headhunterke Posted July 17, 2016 Author #3 Share Posted July 17, 2016 (edited) This article says it involves US aircraft, but there's other articles which state it applies to other flights as well. Turkish Airlines' flights yesterday (16/7) and today (17/7) to the US have all been cancelled. Here's another source in English, which is a pretty good one in my experience: http://thepointsguy.com/2016/07/faa-bans-flights-from-turkey/ Also, my colleagues of Turkish Airlines have confirmed me last night this is indeed (as far as they know right now) applicable to all flights leaving/arriving the US. Conflicting results, so this will be worth to watch with a close eye. Edited July 17, 2016 by headhunterke
purduemom1 Posted July 17, 2016 #4 Share Posted July 17, 2016 Interesting. Turkish Air has had some good fares for those flying to European cities from the US. Guess that won't be an option, at least for awhile.
purduemom1 Posted July 17, 2016 #5 Share Posted July 17, 2016 Just read the linked article. Can understand the ban if there isn't adequate security at the airports. So looks like no codeshare flights either i.e. IST to LHR and then to the US.
headhunterke Posted July 18, 2016 Author #6 Share Posted July 18, 2016 If by codeshare you mean, flying in from IST to LHR on TK and then connecting on to United should be no problem. What TK can not do is launch a route directly from LHR into the US to avoid the ban. Some cariers were able to do this in the past with approval of the FAA (JetAirways flew from India to Brussels and then onto the US because they were not allowed to have direct flights either). But that special rule does not apply with this case.
purduemom1 Posted July 18, 2016 #7 Share Posted July 18, 2016 Thanks for clarifying. Certainly isn't good for Turkish Air's non stops to and from the US.
Brighton Line Posted July 18, 2016 #8 Share Posted July 18, 2016 Delta was going to have service this summer but it was cancelled before it even started. US carriers can't even overfly Turkey.
Regguy Posted July 18, 2016 #9 Share Posted July 18, 2016 The August 15 date was just a placeholder in case the ban hadn't been lifted before then. The ban has been lifted.
