Breakaway and Smoke......

I just don't understand why 30 years ago smoking was permitted everywhere, restaurants, work places, theaters, arenas, malls, break rooms at schools and we never heard complaints. Now you could be smoking somewhere and someone 30 feet away complains about it.

I am not a smoker by the way.

Dan

It's simple we didn't have all the factual evidence of the harm smoking causes and we were conditioned to expect smoke everywhere. The workplace the store on airplanes etc

Also

More people smoked back then...that's why. No need for the majority to complain and the rest of us were conditioned sheeple. Now smokers are a dying breed and certainly in the minority. It's a simple strength in numbers situation.

also it was more like 40 years ago because By 1986 many non smoking bans were finally put in place

In 1982 I had a chain smoking constant coughing and spitting up mucus cubicle neighbor

This was at the biggest bank in the world at their world headquarters and my complaints fell on deaf ears. The company bought him a smokeless ashtray that buzzed when it was on which of course was constant

Today that guy would have to go down 58 flights and walk 25 yards away from the building to smoke. Go figure.

It's just impossible to not smell smoke when walking thru the casino

Why? Simply because it's a smoking venue

Wether it bothers someone or not is not the point

The point is that if you walk thru the casino and don't smell smoke then the problem is more with a persons sense of smell or lack thereof

The casino is smoky and you can smell it even though there are some people that won't be bothered by it

I'm not arguing that point. I'm well aware that smoke bothers people. My issue was with the poster who said that the areas are unusable etc.

Theres a big difference.

Have you been on the ba? The fact is due to the open design of 6/7/8 many bars can't be used by those who need or want to avoid smoke and le bistro does in fact get smoke drifting into it and I'm not imagining this either.

24/7? No of course not but on my 12 day ba cruise we never were able to stay in the affected area very long. We basically just had to walk thru quickly when required.

I'm not the only one btw that recognizes the excessive smoke on the ba in that particular area and how the terrible open design allows smoke to spread into non smoking areas

I guess we're just misunderstanding each other. I'm not a fan of smoke, but I was simply saying that nobody should state as fact that the area is unusable for everyone or most. It's going to depend on the person how long they can stay there or if they choose to stay there at all.

I've read about the smoke in the area and I agree its a definite oversight and poor design.

Obviously if you are very sensitive to smoke or can't be around it all or simply choose not to be near it, until something changes, you should probably not sail on the BA.

I thought the person who said area was unusable was referring to my question where I said I can't stand the slightest scent of it. It only stands to reason that if they allow smoking in the casino and it opens up to other areas, those will be affected as well. I probably will completely avoid the floors of the atrium and Le Bistro. Boo. But Cagneys and Cucina sound great. As for the people commenting that they will break the rules about not smoking on balconies, I don't understand why they seem to take glee is making things unpleasant for others. We all need to work together and be considerate. I feel terrible if I am part of making another's experience unpleasant.

I definitely agree. I follow the rules and laws and I try to be a courteous and decent human being by respecting my fellow passengers, guests, people, etc.

If you have been on the Breakaway, what was your experience with cigarette smoke? I am used to the casinos being so smokey I cannot go in them, but I'm reading more and more accounts from people saying that smoking is allowed in many areas on the Breakaway and it is very noticeable. I'm particularly interested in the Waterfront area. Is there a smoking and nonsmoking side, or is it a free for all??

Horrible. I think smoking should be banned from ships just as it has been on airplanes.

NCL is a family oriented line with many kids. The fact that the "smoking section" on a number of the ships is right on the pool deck (near kids areas no less) is crazy. And many smokers are oblivious to this fact.

To each their own if they wish to smoke, but please respect the non smokers and kids.

the semi - enclosed designated smoking area pool side is right by the children's play area. this is ridiculous. people have the right to smoke but it shouldn't infringe upon those who do not want to be around it. and smokers shouldn't feel like criminals. they did a very poor job on the design of this ship and I would hope they find a way to reconfigure the casino and pool areas.

I skimmed thread.

If we spent as much time as you all bickering about whatnot, we could have sailed many times by now.

:D

You do realize you all sound like idiots, right.

Reread the thread.

Do you all ever go back and reread the noise you type?

I do admit that some threads do have an entertainment value.

And there are some great writers, but ...

But geesh.

If you all want to attract newbies, you're failing. ....

JMO

Please continue to bicker amongst yourselves. lol

Totally agree but it just goes to reinforce the incredibly poor design of this ship

People also drove without seat belts. Drank and drove. People might not have complained. But that did not mean it was pleasant.

Thirty years ago my mother QUIT SMOKING. Cold turkey. She had breathing problems then. She turned 82 this week. Her doc says she will live to 125. Unfortunately 30 years ago my dad continued to smoke. A year later a heart attack. Followed by a triple bypass. He lived to 2000. I know how I feel about how much we have learned in 30 years.

The idea that anyone should have to SEARCH out smoke free areas in order to breathe healthy air, when they've paid a huge amt. for a wonderful cruise is INSANE.

The RADIANCE of THE SEAS is awful for smoky misery---- the open doors of the casino and the huge central atrium serves as a CHIMNEY and FUNNEL to spread the smoke all over the place.

All ships with this central atrium design will be the same.

You have the CHOICE to sail with CELEBRITY AND CUNARD, where the problems don't exist.

Spend you $$$ on ships/ companies with decent smoking rules.

Use your FEET to walk away from ships/ companies like NCL + RC

We will be on the BA in October. I have a cabin in the aft and plan on smoking out on my balcony when the ship is in motion. My smoke will go behind the ship, just like the smoke coming out of the ships smokestack. I always put cigarette out in a glass of water, so no chance of fire. Deal with it people !!!

You would think so, but that's not exactly true. My daughter, who is a hairstylist, cut my hair in an aft balcony once. We got some hair on a towel and decided to just shake it off the back of the ship thinking it would just blow away. Instead, it blew back towards the ship and stuck to everyone's glass balcony dividers. So your smoke is likely to do the same. Your neighbours are going to love you about as much as ours loved us.

I pointed out that on the BA dailies once that under smoking regs that it Did not stipulate that balcony smoking had been banned

This was in January 2015 on the 12 day

I believe the balcony smoking ban began November 2014

Guest services was appalled that the dailies were incorrect and admitted the printing Dept had just reused the template from the January 2014 12 day

Guest services seemed sincere and apologized and sent me a fruit plate 😳as a thank you and it was corrected the following day

I would have been ok with a free drink coupon instead of the fruit plate. Lol

Whatever happened to the (proposed ??) scheme NCL spoke of, to study or look into designing & constructing new partitions to contain or funnel the cigarette smoke in the casino & exhaust them with filtration/stronger HVAC or ventilation, etc. on the *Away class ships.

The "Joy" will be even worst - don't even think of booking it until proven otherwise; or, bring plenty of & wear facial masks (N95, not surgical ones) while in the area.

It is Saturday morning and I just had a few good laughs. Quit smoking twice, I know that's not the thread, just background. Even enjoyed a smoke-fee cruise when I did not smoke. I believe those ships are out there, still? I now do enjoy my ecig, and I guarantee you, nobody would even know I have it with the nicotine free ejuice I use, just saying. My point being, there are smoke free cruise ships out there and if anyone is so adverse to cigarette smoke I think they would much rather enjoy those than worrying about the ship that allows smoking in designated areas. And I would think the people that do smoke would not enjoy or embark on a smoke free ship. Many choices in life, and we all need to decide for ourselves and we are all entitled to our own opinion. No matter what, thanks for a few laughs this morning.:)

We were in Bermuda on the BA. On the second day it was a monsoon. Everybody came back to the ship and the casino (LITERALLY in the middle of the ship in an open atrium) it was just one huge cloud of smoke. We went back to the Haven where there was no smoking.

Celebrity only allows smoking on the port side aft deck (as far as I can remember). There is no smoking in any interior space so for the most part it is a smoke free line.

Times have changed over the years. Growing up both me parents smoked and when driving they would "crack" the window a little bit. Ugh

You could smoke on airplanes, restaurants, place of employment, and casinos. Over the years smoking laws changed and most establishments prohibited smoking indoors. Then other businesses, restaurants, shopping malls, ect. The casinos after much debate from casinos also went smoke free. Now I see that you can not smoke close to the doors to buildings.

Hopefully the cruise lines will eventually ban smoking in the casino. I would think they would keep the outdoor smoking areas intact.

I am non smoker and like to go to casino. I have to bring plastic bags for my cloths because they smell smoky.

I am someone looking for suggestions for smoke free cruising. I am fairly certain that Oceania is smoke free, but the next cruise that I want to go on is actually a river cruise so haven't really had a chance to research that too much.

I think that the reason the Breakaway is a particular problem is the design of the ship and how facilities on the ship are used- where the casino is located on the ship and the open atrium area.
