Bad Jealous Evil Bosses Trying to Ruin Your Cruise

 Share

Recommended Posts

First of all I am just venting. Mostly.

I have had a cruise to Alaska on the books and leave planned and approved at work for the last two years. Work has a project that has been on the books for a year and a half. Due date comes out the day I get off the ship and two days before I return to work. And that due date was just issued two days ago. I figured out a way to make the due date and my boss changed everything again today.

Part of me wants to use my cruise insurance if work is going to cancel this cruise. But most of me wants to cruise no matter what.

I have planned this cruise for years and my work has been on notice. They had no problem until I had to take off a few days and telework for a few weeks because I needed a hip replacement surgery. Since the surgery they have been all over me me because I can't walk fast enough, etc. (I am not a person who needs to move fast- I am an administrative specialist with performance scores of 9 out of 10 until my disability). I am also a seriously physically disabled vet. They did not know that before my surgery. Now all of a sudden I have work that conflicts with this cruise? It is like they realized I was going on leave and assigned me work I could not do while I was gone.

I am so frustrated. I want to cruise Alaska on the Legend next week. But it may cost my job.

Has anyone else had a crappy boss who opposed their cruise?

That's an outrage. Threaten to quit. You are entitled to a vacation. They dont own you. Their poor planning is not your personal crisis. If they make you stay do a really crappy job. Of course I work for myself so I take off whenever I want.

Sorry, but if I had a cruise booked and arrangements made that far ahead, I would tell them bye bye. If they threatened to can me I would ask them to refund every dime. If that didn't work I would be gone they could kiss my butt.

You may have figured out why I have been self-employed all these years.

Even being self employed doesn't help. Last cruise with DH, he ended up getting with a Mandatory Court hearing for during the cruise two days before we were to set sail. Ended up going with sis.

Oh my gosh thank you for your support! I really expected people to hate my whining and tell me to suck it up. I don't know if I could get another job and (oh my goodness here goes my sob story) my husband in an unemployable 100 percent disabled combat vet. I am a severely disabled vet myself. We have done ok. Then I got a new boss who "prefers" able bodied people and functional spouses. She also has enough income to prefer river cruises and cannot understand why it would possibly be any problem to cancel a "common" Carnival cruise. I am sick right now.

Missing this cruise is the least of your problems. You need to find an attorney immediately who specializes in this sort of thing to determine what your options are, because it sounds to me like they're setting you up to fire you.

Tell'em BYE FELICIA!!!

I wouldn't say anything. They know you have vacation scheduled. I wouldn't say anything. Just go on vacation. Make sure you have the approval letters. If they trip when you get back. Go to HR. Tell HR you feel threatened if your supervisor says anything.

Ditto the suggestion of finding an attorney/support for the (at best borderline) discrimination in your workplace. I worked in constituent services for a U.S. Congressman for a few years and their offices provide great (free!) support for vets (and others) on partial/full disability.

Thank you both for your service and I'm sorry you have to put up with nonsense at work instead of looking forward to your trip!

I don't know how I can explain this without crossing a line. I have done nothing wrong and frankly because of what I do they cannot fire me. Think EEO or Inspector General or Legal or whatever.

But I really think they are using my time away as a way to get rid of me- fine my drama and pain.

I am just wondering if anyone else out their had gone through the same hate because they were cruising.

I don't have your exact same situation, but the manager I work for now doesn't seem to be able to plan more than about a week ahead. I ended up taking out cruise insurance with a "Cancel for any/work reason" clause just because I didn't trust him.

You all are correct- only I work in the legal department. I am the reasonble accommodation expert. Thus the dilemma- they will find a way and another way and another way to f$&@ me. Seen it done. A bit afraid to even post this.

So- do I give in, keep my job and skip my dream cruise or do I toss the dice and believe my employer will actually follow policy, procedures, rules and laws?

No matter what I do I am hosed.

Go to HR now. They should be able to intervene on your behalf. You would not want to go on vacation with all of this hanging over your head. Something seriously wrong with the way you are being treated.

I agree with this. I don't know your company's policies, but if I tried that with someone who worked for me, HR would intervene and tell me to pound sand. Of course, I would never do that to someone.

So, you have spoken to HR and gone over the issue? Its hard to give advice on this because there are a lot of factors including how easy would it be to get another job. But it's also hard for me to imagine a company would take such a hard stance when you have given them such advanced notice. I feel for you.

I am sorry this is happening to you. Despite you giving more than adequate notice, your workplace is determined to keep you from enjoying or even going on your vacation. I hope you will be able to complete their project before you go, and then try to have a good time. You should be prepared for more static from your job, they would probably like you to quit, so they will keep making your work life uncomfortable. I have known many people that have been subjected to this type of crap, and it's very wrong. Best wishes.

Well, in that case, go on the cruise and enjoy.

I was just offered a promotion today, that starts Monday, cruise starts next Sunday. They offered to pay for the costs if I would cancel. So I said yes.

First act of my new job, submitting a $3000 claim. They said to take the cruise, and I get to keep the promotion.

Tell him they have to buy you out for all expenses.

On a personal level I think you know what is going on... For that you need to start exploring options... Don't wait for it to go down... Being disabled and in pain, there is always the option of fmla which will buy you some time, go on the cruise, and in the interim, you can use your fmla time to look for a more accommodating place to work... I personally would not give up on a vacation I planned for 2 years for a company that I believe will be letting me go following the project that they need me to complete... Just IMO

I am no attorney but I imagine that there are many resources for disabled veterans who are unfairly treated. You put your life on the line for our freedom. That is special. You are entitled and deserve a vacation. Even more you deserve respect. Don't let some bully push you around. Standing up to a bully is always the best course. Contact your attorney, congressman, the VA, the local TV station, the local newspaper, and anyone else you can think of. If you are in a union, contact your rep. Thank you and your husband for your service to our nation. Let us know how this turns out. We care about you and are pulling for you. God Bless.

I feel sorry for you. An abusive boss is toxic and affects not only your work life, but also your personal life (as you are describing), and can be detrimental to your physical and emotional health over time.

Be sure you take notes regularly as this author describes. It sounds like you may be needing them in the future.

I had a situation where two days before my vacation my boss informed me if I went my job would not be there for me when I returned so I was advised to cancel my trip. Needless to say I went to his boss and explained the situation. Low and behold one year to the date my boss was fired for his treatment of me. He was so difficult to work for.

We really feel the OP's pain and understand that, at times, the OP must feel like in a snare trap with no escape. And it comes down to priorities and relative importance of the job versus having control of your life. Your alternatives are quite simple. Either be willing to leave the job (on your terms) and pursue your travel plans, or stay in the job with the hope that eventually things will improve (with no guarantee). Tough calls, Personally, DW and I have been avid travelers for over thirty years (more then forty for me). During my career, I made it clear to my bosses (at every stage) of my travel passion. Our decision (DW and moi) was to put our love of travel ahead of my career. Now that we are retired (and free) I sometimes look back and ask, was it worth sacrificing some career opportunities to maintain my ability to travel. In our case, the answer is clearly yes...and we have no regrets. Others will disagree and sacrifice health, happiness, personal wants, etc. for their careers. No right or wrong....just personal preference.

I agree 100 percent with this statement. Good Luck.
