Laptops and Safe

I am traveling with a new cruiser. I know that laptops do not fit in the safe. My daughter always brings hers and we have always left it in the room with zero problems. We did not even think about it. Does anyone have any suggestions for storing lap tops?

I travel with a little 11 1/2" HP and just leave it on the desk plugged in. It has never been

touched. We also bring 2 Kindles with us and leave them next to the computer. Been doing that for a couple of years now and no problems. Happy cruising.

Hi there

If the laptop that doesn't fit in the safe is required, a lock for your suitcase is easy enough and it will be safe.

They also have computers on the ship that can be used if the laptop were left at home.

Smaller sized computers are easier to travel with and do fit in the safe. At todays prices, it could be an option to consider.

have a great cruise

I always have my iPad and iPhone with me. And I just kind of hide them to any one passing by with an open door. When room is being cleaned. Never had a problem the room stewards don't touch them.

I mean don't leave them right next to the door with and arrow point at them

I travel with my iPad air 2, which costs just as much, if not more than most laptops ... and I always leave it right on the desk and it's never been touched. I have it insured through Worth Ave Group (Google them) which covers loss/theft internationally with only a $50 deductible.

If you have always left it out with zero problems (as we have) what is the worry now?

But yes, a simple lock on a suitcase.

They won't bother it. If they do, they know it means their job. Besides, you're out to sea for a majority of the time, there's nowhere for a thief to escape. And there's only so many people with access to your cabin, so the list of suspects is short. ;) But my vote is for putting it in a locked suitcase and under your bed if it's going to make you, or your new cruiser companion, feel better.

Why are you concerned about it this trip?

OP mentioned that they are traveling with a new cruiser. My guess is, that new cruiser has expressed concern and the OP wants to make them feel comfortable about their belongings.

I've never taken my laptop on a cruise, but when I take it on land-based vacations and leave it in the hotel then I use this lock:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000K4KH

You just lock it to a permanent (or heavy) piece of furniture and it's pretty tough. They can (of course) break your laptop or try to use it (so keep it secure that way), but you won't have to worry about it wandering off.

They also sell ones that use a code instead of a key, if you don't want to carry a key around on a cruise.

Exactly what I do. I'm not sure why people always forget about their suitcases as a place to lock up valuables. It's big, and has a lock on it. It's perfect.

I take it you've never seen the videos of how easy it is to open a locked suitcase by applying pressure using the point of a pen in the teeth of the zipper.

Thank you everyone for your responses.

I am traveling with someone I have never traveled with before that is very anul and he was concerned so I told him I would ask here to ease his mind. I leave my phone on the desk all of the time when it is charging. I have no worries...

Hi there

So, who are you talking about? Your cabin steward?

When? After they have rifled through your drawers to see if you left any jewelry lying around. Of course they would also check through your pockets to see if you left a $20 bill in one of them, maybe even a casino chip. I guess if they don't find anything they could just finish cleaning your cabin and go on to the next cabin. Better luck next time.

These people are just doing a job. I wouldn't work for an employer that didn't trust me. Why do you think these people should work for you if you don't trust them?

have a great cruise

Tell your friend to take a deep breath. Do you know how hard it is to get a job on a cruise ship? These are great jobs for foreign workers. I know by American standards they do not make a lot of money. However it is a fortune in their native country and they send home money to support their family. One morning we headed out for breakfast and I left $600 in casino chips on the table, along with laptops, ipads, and cameras. We returned to the cabin and everything was in place and the room was clean.

I hate how asking one question can cause debate. This will be my 17th cruise and never EVER have I had a problem. He asked me the question and I told him my answer..that we feel everything is safe in the room and the entire ship. I told him I would post this to get other peoples answers. He has never cruised and doesn't get it. I just wanted to put his mind at ease. I KNEW what the answers would be as I am as comfortable as all of you. Thank you for answering and I will pass all of your positive comments on so he will feel comfortable leaving his computer out :) Thank you everyone!!! I trust every employee that I have come in contact with on Carnival.

We have our sons IPAD insured through Worth Avenue Group as well. They were one of the places we found that would insure for theft. They had the best reviews.

I take my Kindle and have never had an issue. But I do hide things in drawers or other places as the room stewards leave the doors open when cleaning. I don't mind that..I just hate when they WALK AWAY and leave the door open...anyone could walk in .
