CeleBrat Posted October 7, 2016 #1 Share Posted October 7, 2016 Wondering if/when it will be open again for ships. CeleBrat
CruiserBruce Posted October 7, 2016 #2 Share Posted October 7, 2016 There have been some hints on the HAL board (and Princess for their near by private island area) that the area dodged the bullet. But it has barely been 24 hours. There are many more important things than a private island. Give it a day or two.
Towel Critter Posted October 9, 2016 #3 Share Posted October 9, 2016 Okay, it's been a few days. Any news at all concerning how much damage, if any, HMC suffered?
CruiserBruce Posted October 9, 2016 #4 Share Posted October 9, 2016 (edited) From a couple of threads on the Carnival board, they checked HMC yesterday. Carnival has announced that it's scheduled stop there tomorrow will not happen. Other than that, no specific info on HMC. Reports from other islands in the area describe relatively light damage. I would expect HMC will be accepting ships again in the near future. Edited October 9, 2016 by CruiserBruce

The cancellation could be due to something as simple as tender boats not yet being returned. Pure speculation on my part. At any rate, I'm glad damage in the area is minimal. I wish we could say the same for Haiti and other islands hard hit by Matthew. Edited October 9, 2016 by Towel Critter
RSWBADGER Posted October 9, 2016 #6 Share Posted October 9, 2016 (edited) The Carnival Conquest cruise will depart on Oct. 9. Unfortunately, after post-storm assessments, we are sorry that we cannot call on Half Moon Cay as the island is not ready to support our visit there. You will receive a refund for any pre-paid shore excursions and the taxes, fees and port expenses for Half Moon Cay. The remainder of our itinerary remains as scheduled. This from the Carnival website today. https://help.carnival.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4091 Edited October 9, 2016 by RSWBADGER
CruiserBruce Posted October 10, 2016 #7 Share Posted October 10, 2016 HMC will be accepting ships in about 2 weeks.
DallasGuy75219 Posted October 10, 2016 #8 Share Posted October 10, 2016 HMC will be accepting ships in about 2 weeks. I don't follow John Heald, but in a couple of posts in the Carnival forum people say he's reporting it will be up and running for the Valor's call there on October 15. Towel Critter Posted October 10, 2016 #9 Share Posted October 10, 2016 HMC will be accepting ships in about 2 weeks. Thank you. That works great for me, as I am to visit on October 30. It will be disappointing for those scheduled to visit in the next two weeks though.
cactuslady Posted October 15, 2016 #10 Share Posted October 15, 2016 We are booked on a snorkel by boat excursion at HMC in December. I'm sure the island will be pristine, but am interested in any reports of whether the hurricane damaged the coral/wildlife in the snorkeling areas. CeleBrat Posted October 17, 2016 Author #11 Share Posted October 17, 2016 Just got back from the Valor, and we made a stop there on SAT. The island looks great! None of the structures have any visible roof damage. Trees seems to be OK. If you walk down to the farther, remote end of the island, you can see where the storm caused quite a bit of beach erosion. And, there are some of the trees near the water line that are tipped over. But--that just adds to the remoteness of the island. Otherwise--it's all good! CeleBrat That's great news. :) We were on the 10/9 sailing of the Conquest and we had to bypass the island and head directly to Amber Cove. The Captain told us during the Behind the Fun tour that the island had sustained significant damage, so it's great that it's already back up and running. Sadly, I am now only 2-for-5 in attempts to make it to HMC.
