Once a day room cleaning trial.

They have more cabins to get tips from so they can still make the same or more.

Why tip the same for less service? Not saying we would reduce the tip by half but would certainly reduce the tip by something.

Reduce the stewards portion by half. Since the stewards portion is about $4 per person/per day, the overall, cut the $12.95 per person to $10.95 specifying it is the stewards portion being reduced.

A cruise is a singular experience. It has nothing to do with what happened last week, last year, or a decade ago. To reduce tips because you didn't get the same service you got on the last cruise is beyond ridiculous...tips are given for what you get, not withheld for what you didn't.

I can unequivocally say that my pet peeve on these boards are the comments that that start with: "I got "x" last cruise so I better get it this cruise or heads will roll".

Geesh, I got my windshield washed, my oil checked, and my gas pumped at the fuel station down the street the last time I visited it in 1966. I better get that same service, today, or I am going to raise all kinds of stink and advise everyone that I think that service station and its employees are lazy and lousy. The grocery store that has been around for upteen years and where they hauled my stuff out of the cart and then bagged it for me and escorted me to my car when I shopped there in 1980 now makes me empty my own cart, bag my own groceries, and load my car by myself. Someone should complain about how sad the "service" is at that store.

Wonder if people really want to go back to "real" cruising where rooms had two twin beds bolted to the floor, served only 3 meals a day and you were "forced" to eat at designated times. Daytime activities were shuffleboard, skeet shooting, or bingo. At night there was a piano bar and cards. But you were treated like royalty...the staff outnumbered the guests and you paid a couple of months wages for the privilege. Obviously people loved it because "nothing" has changed, or has it?

I guess you're one of those that would be tickled pink if gas jumped from $2 per gallon to $4 per gallon overnight.

I guess I'm lucky that neither my wallet nor I have to worry about your beliefs. :)

No, because those are not tipped positions. They get paid at least minimum wage. I don't tip every staff member of a cruise either. My point is that I pay tips wherever it is expected. I don't like to stiff people based on what a corporation decides.

So don't. No one is trying to tell you what to do with the money you earn. Spend it how you want just like I'll spend mine how I want.

Just to keep an iron in the fire....so to speak, does that mean that if they killed the trial and then cut the rooms by half that the room steward services, you would double the tips?

I have never worried about how many cabins the steward has to clean. I have only worried about the service provided to me. So if the cabin steward was expecting double the tips, i would be expecting double the service (4 cleanings a day).

SInce we are talking hypothetical, I doubt you would do it then. My point was most here make points in "justifying tip removal" that the RS has double the cabins (not true by the way) and that is their justification to reduce if it goes to once a day. I was poking holes in that logic.

The number of rooms a steward has to serve does not factor into any decision for me. My decision is based on the quality of services received.

'Recommended gratuities' have gone up and yet they are deliberately cutting the service of this one aspect. I will cut the room steward tips if the service is halved.

Just as I no longer tip a serviceman at a gas station for less services nor do I tip people at a grocery store that no longer provide a service.

Room configurations and number of meals have nothing to do with this thread.

Changes do occur but so do tips when the service provided is cut.

I don't know about everyone else....if we have 4 clean bath towels, cpl of facecloths and hand towels....1 clean up is fine by us...we don't live like pigs in our room (though can't speak for everyone) quite frankly I couldn't figure out what they did on the 2nd clean up (AS FAR AS THE ACTUAL ROOM WENT)...I will ask for a cpl of extra towels in the morning and I am GOOD for the day!

That's bad math. The cabin steward is only part of the daily tip. You should be cutting only the steward's potion in half, not the entire tip.

Let's do the math together, shall we? Daily tips for a steward hovers around $4 per person per day. We then multiply that rate by the amount of people in a cabin, which in my case is 4. 4X4, carry the 1, is 16.

Now for our guzintas. If I want to split that tip in half, I know 2 guzinta 16, 8 times, so the new tip would be 8.

Ergo, $16 becomes $8.

I think if you read closer you'll see that the vast majority of "2x a day folks" aren't expecting a 2nd cleaning visit but rather a 2nd visit with dry towels, ice refilled and the new Funtimes. Passengers do not have access to those things so do want them delivered :)

I just firmly advised the steward that my preference is twice per day as always. There was no pressure. I'm sure if you are firm enough, they will not push as that could possibly affect their compensation from me at the end of the cruise. Did not have a problem when we sailed on the Vista. Just stated my preference.

I understand your point of view, I just disagree with it. Keep my service twice a day and all is good. Cut it in half and I will cut the steward portion in half ($2 per person per day instead of $4 per person per day). Rest of the tips will stay in place. I have no problem paying for what I receive but I expect to receive what I pay for (my point of view). :)

Try using per person per day numbers instead of your unknown family size and your posts would be much clearer.

I understand the points of view from both sides of the coin; both those who want to keep their twice a day service, and those who are ok with, or prefer once a day, regardless of reasons. I think if Carnival offers the choice, then it is a good thing, but if it is a move toward once a day for everyone, which is what I suspect it is, than this is not good. Give people a choice, and then everyone is happy.

After a long hard day sightseeing or beaching and a long night eating and drinking nice to crawl into a nice freshly made bed.

With the tip increase, I searched for a new breakdown but have been unsuccessful. It seems like they have grouped it all together. So my question is, how would you remove half the tips from stewards only & know it's not dividing the reduced tips among everyone who served you during the cruise? I feel they intentionally took away the breakdown for this reason.

Go to GS and ask. If they are not willing to tell me the amount I need to reduce I would simply remove all and tip as I go.

Estimation/Guesstimation.

You're cutting the recommended portion of the cabin steward gratuities for something the steward had no control over -- this is still hypothetical but if it comes to fruition, it will be a corporate decision -- so you're penalizing someone for doing their job appropriately according to company policy.

I know I know - you don't care. So you're cutting his/her tip in half for not doing the job 2x..do you reward him for doing 2x extra things he/she does for you and reciprocate by giving more gratuities?

I understand what you are saying, but why is it the customer's responsibility. In reality if the steward cleans more cabins, but only once a day, they will receive more money if people pay the full gratuity. Saying the customer doesn't care is putting the responsibility on them to make sure the steward gets at least the same pay and they didn't ask for that either. I don't feel they should have to be concerned about that.

I will wait and see what happens in the future, not going to cross that bridge until I get to it.
