Opinions about Royal IQ app.Thinking about it on my Harmony of the Seas cruise

Hello there. I'm asking for people to please chime in with their experiences with the Royal IQ app.(ideally on Harmony of the Seas, but not necessary)

I'm cruising aboard Harmony of the Seas late April/early May and from what I've see the app looks not too bad. I would love to hear how you felt it performed.

I plan on spending the $7.95? for my phone and my friend that I'm travelling with, do the same so we can text and call each other onboard.

How did the text/call features work for you? I think you have to keep the app open in order to get notifications and calls. Is that correct? Was that a hassle?

Can you keep your phone on airplane mode and still use the text/call features? (I don't want to incur huge roaming charges)

What else does the app do? Does it sync/transfer my cruise calendar with any pre-cruise reservations I have made to the app?

How up to date is it? Does it have the daily cruise compass on it? (does it update through the day for changes/cancellations etc?)

If I want to change or make a reservation on the ship is that possible? If so, how reliable was it? Did you run into any problems making reservations using the app only to find out they were not received etc?

I have heard that there has been some problems with people using the app onboard causing conflict with others who have done their reservations well before the cruise. Do you have nay experience with that?

If I want to use the app I guess i download it pre-cruise then activate it on the ship. is that correct?

Sorry for the copious questions. I just want to know if this is a worthwhile reliable app for my cruise.

Much thanks

I thought the app was free? I never heard of the 7.95 charge. I assume that is an optional charge if you want onboard texting and calling to other app users? is that 7.95 per day?

The $7.95 charge is per phone per cruise, only if you want to text and call.

Yes, it does

It does have the daily cruise compass on it and actually for the entire week if you know how to filter that way (my wife found that out). We found that it did update with changes during the day, but I suspect that depends on human intervention on the CD staff's part.

Yes, download it first and then once onboard you activate it with your information. It has to be connected to their wifi before it'll work.

I just want to be clear. I knew you could text with the paid feature (to other app users on the same wifi of course), but can you actually make calls to those other users as well? This would be the first I've heard of any option to call through the app.

Here is the explanation:

I've no idea of the quality/reliability of the calling feature.

Happy to get the app so we can check on reservations and view the Cruise Compass.

We will all have the Voom package so I would never want to pay 7.95 per phone to communicate. Can't we just I-message over WiFi?

Yes, iMessage will work over WiFi.

I used it on the transatlantic and found that if you made changes to your reservations, the app did not update:confused:

I was on the week before the transatlantic and it worked great! Then for the transatlantic cruise it didn't show all my reservations, could not book anything, see my seapass account, etc. And said our final destination was Barcelona!

I had friends that went a few weeks ago and said it worked great so guess it is fixed now.

But what about texting home? Will that be expensive?

The RoyalIQ app only lets you text to others on the same ship using the Royal IQ app.

If you want to text others, you can either pay by the text ($0.50 for AT&T) or buy VOOM and use internet based texting.

I can answer most of these for you, as I was just on the Harmony a few weeks ago.

You do keep your phone on Airplane mode and simply use the wifi feature (even with the text option).

It does sync with your cruise planner calendar and will show all show and dining reservations that you have made, as well as any activities/excursions you pre-planned and purchased prior to your cruise (excursions outside of Royal Caribbean sponsored are not on the app for obvious reasons).

It will have your cruise compasses on there. I found that something would be updated on the app version of the compass, but somethings were not. Our aqua show that was canceled every night on our cruise until the last day would show up on the following day when it was rescheduled.

As far as scheduling and canceling things on the app, I personally found it a very useful tool. In fact, as soon as we boarded, I connected to the wifi right in the Promenade and was able to schedule dining within 5 minutes of being on board without having to go stand in line anywhere. I also was able to cancel dining reservations mid-week that we had and wanted to move around. I know that I have seen people report issues, but we didn't have the first problem with doing our dining reservations or cancellations on the app. Of course, we had traditional dining and not MTD, so we didn't do reservations for that on the App, we only did specialty dining reservations.

I would also like to add that you can view your onboard account to see what your balance is at anytime during your cruise. It is in real time, so if you go to a bar and order a drink (we had the drink packages) it will show up immediately on your app.

We downloaded the app about a week before our cruise, but it really didn't need to be downloaded that far in advance because there is nothing you can do on it until you board the ship. So, I would say download the day prior to your cruise and then when you board you can login and access it immediately!

Enjoy your cruise. I'm already cruise shopping for something in March for my birthday even though we have a cruise booked for December next year! LOL

Oh, funny....I had forgotten about it taking us back to Barcelona!

  • 1 month later...
I just called royal. They told me I had to purchase Voom in order to use the app???

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

No one has mentioned having to purchase VOOM in order to use the app. Many times I get false information when I call RCCL. Can anyone, the has recently been on HOS verify the above statement regarding VOOM and the use of the RCCL app?

I used it often on Harmony last week.

I wish it had deck plans. I mentioned that in my cruise review.

Yes to both questions.
