Word is someone wore shorts to the MDR for dinner.

Balcony smokers.....

Lol! When I last cruised on the Explorer I had to take the elevator and there were three teen boys on it that I had seen all night riding up and down just sitting on the floor of the elevator. I got on with a bunch of other people and one of the teens got up and ran to the buttons with his palm out (in order to slam on every button) and I grabbed his wrist and growled 'touch those gd buttons and I'll break it' and he gulped, said 'sorry ma'am' and sat his ass down lol! I was the hero of the cruise for the next day. :p Hey, someone has to teach somebody's brat some manners! May as well be me. It takes a village and all....

You should consider yourself lucky that you weren't charged for assault and uttering threats. As annoying as the kids' behaviour might have been, that's no excuse for an adult to respond as you did IMO.

And it's attitudes like this that allow precious snowflakes to flourish. Assault and uttering threats? Are you a lawyer?

I see this as being caused by a lack of parenting. Someone has to show the kid the difference between irresponsible and responsible behaviour. Too bad the parent couldn't do that. All you're showing the kid is do what you want and play the legal card at the first sign of trouble, which is way worse than a grab of the wrist and a veiled threat.

True Story

In the early 2000s while sailing with my good friend and my family, this exact situation happened to me.

I won't mention the cruise line or ship because I'm lucky to have not get banned, I still enjoy and sail this line today. Copious amounts of alcohol was involved and that's all I'm going to say.

We left Florida heading on an eastern Caribbean itinerary. On the first night the "incident" occurred and the security team confronted my friend and I as we were heading to our rooms. My friend was pepper sprayed and the security officer chased me to the room, as I got the door open in the nick of time, he stuck his foot in my door to try to pry it open. I tackled the door and broke his ankle and the door closed, eventually my friend was let back to the room and we were confined to our cabin indefinitely. We had a 24/7 escort outside our door with a clipboard and chair. We attempted a few escapes but his radio broadcasts dispersed security quickly.

We were told we were going to be disembarked by life boat to the Bahamas, large waves made this impossible so we had 2 full days at sea ahead of us until we reached st martin.

We ordered 2 of everything off the room service menu and chained smoked cigarettes non stop in our ocean view cabin. After writing an apology letter to the captain we were allowed two 15 minute breaks a day to the promenade deck for some air.

When we arrived in St martin we were disembarked with an escort that took us on the airplane and flew to Miami with us. The reason being is because my friend was 20 at the time. The cruise line paid for the airline tickets which I imagine were very expensive since it was last minute.

We were young and stupid, not our proudest moments but certainly a good story.

Good work! Now we can read follow up responses to your post and infer which ones are the parents of these brats. Lol

So I am posting from the Independence of the Seas while we're enjoying a 5-night and I want to ask about something strange that we see on our deck. On our deck (9) there have been security details posted in the hall directly in front of an inside cabin. They have rotations of shifts and they are sitting just outside of the cabin with a clipboard.

Anyone have any idea of what the issue might be? I believe the guards are there 24/7....

Hmmm. Sounds like one of those, not my concern. Perhaps I should just mind my own business situation.

So I never imagined that my question would evoke this kind of discussion! Even after 25+ cruises I had never seen this before and never thought about any of the issues described here. I think it is a testament to how well the cruise lines handle challenging situations and I also think I can consider myself lucky to have missed out on this particular facet of cruising. :p

One thing's for sure, having that presence in our deck's corridor made for a wonderful diversion for my one-year-old granddaughter each and every time we were heading out or returning to our cabin. The guards smiled and waved bye-bye, etc. making her feel pretty special!

Holy crap, cocaine is expensive there! That's about $333,333 ($243,465 US) a key.

That sounds right!!!! Everything is sooooo expensive here and we don't share a border with Mexico! A glass of wine out is US$9.50. I was in New York last Christmas and found it cheap in comparison to Australia!!! At least our wages are much higher to compensate though!

Lol yes, I'm always expecting the 'but but you grabbed his wrist to stop him from pushing a zillion buttons and inconveniencing everyone on the elevator??? That's child cruelty!!! You can't say 'touch it and I'll break it' because he may get traumatized and not be able to enter elevators as an adult! waah! Protect the feelings of a spoiled, poorly raised brat!' garbage. I don't care. Would I have broken his wrist? Ummm no. But he did think twice and sat down. I guarantee you that he is so incredibly poorly behaved because his parents would have made a post chastising someone or threatening suit over stopping their brat from doing something like that.

Going the legal route is legal. Grabbing a stranger and making a threat of violence is not. If you're trying to show someone right from wrong, that quite literally wasn't the right route at all.

I only have one kid and he's pretty decent, but I have 4 younger siblings and have watched them grow up. My "full" brother and I were raised by our mom and he's really decent. No issues some therapy couldn't help with and he has chosen a life where that therapy isn't needed. The other brothers were raised by our dad and whooie do they have issues. They were raised more in the style of grabbing and threatening, rather than talking.

They still don't know right and wrong perfectly because no one has taken the time to *teach* them much. They were simply yelled at when something in that moment was perceived to be wrong. This perception could change in an instant.

I've watched other non-parents-of-the-kids discipline lots of preteens and teens at the YMCA, and consistently *telling* the kids what the issue is works better and for longer.

Threatening is likely simply more of the same as what they are getting at home. Learning empathy for others (when you do this, this is what happens to all of these people) is likely something new to them, and can help them understand that they aren't the only people on the planet.

Is it more fun for the adult? Nah. Always more fun to scream, isn't it? But it's not effective in any sort of long term way. So now those kids won't touch the elevator buttons when you are there. But when you're not....

Should mention that my dad was raised with a violent dad and capricious avoiding mom (when they moved cross country after dad died she gave them something like laudanum to sleep while she drove rather than having to deal with them and discipline them) and with older siblings doing their best to keep things together with a strong willed third youngest. He was created by that combo and he's created two very messed up men who probably couldn't tell you WHY one shouldn't amuse themselves by hitting all the buttons in the elevator.

(Yes I missed a sibling in there but she's 25 years younger than me and i barely know her. She seems ok but who knows? She was raised mainly by her mom I think, and was born decent and sweet and I haven't noticed her rebel too much. )

If you or they think it's excessive, then the snowflakes shouldn't have taken illegal drugs into the freakn' Bahamas. I'm so sorry to hear the Bahamian police didn't offer them a safe space.

Snowflakes...lol. Good parody of someone wearing a bright red ballcap! Well done.

Here's a post I put on another thread concerning when kids should be allowed to roam at will i wanted to give a two sided view. lol! Btw- I think a good stink eye will shut down most little brats. However a growling don't even think of it from my hubby in the elevator would have left those kids in need of new trousers.. lol! Enjoy!!

Here's my opinion-- I started cruising when I was ten. My older brother and I went w our gparents on a very small ship. It was great- they honestly let us roam wild.. lol. There were maybe twenty other kids total onboard.. we would do our own skits on the stage in the theatre during the day with the other kids. No kids club in those days.. my brother grew tired of it.. he was rather fond of the quarter slider in the casino!! Lol- my gparents were not too happy when they found him there. It became an issue-- he was hooked. They, gparents and casino staff, banned him from even walking through the casino. Yes, we hung out in stair wells and road the elevators.. had no idea what little sh*ts we were being. That being said- never had a problem with weirdos or perverts. Now cruising as a childless just turned 37 year old cruiser when I see kids doing something snotty I call them on it. On one of our transatlantic cruises there were two little girls around 10. They were running around the ship the entire crossing like feral animals. Hair unkept and same clothes for days and days. We were traveling with our ladies from LA who are in their 70's. The girls cut them off getting into the elevator and pushed the door closed button sticking their tongues out as they shot away!! I saw girls later that evening. Holed up in a corner at casino at a slot machine feeding it cash.. yes. I told the casino host and the security guard of the offending children's actions. Later that evening. Seen the mother- finally- up in the nightclub made up like a movie star- girls still in same dirty clothing complaining someone has turned in her sweeties and now she has to bring them with her everywhere.. idk what they were doing in nightclub with the age restriction..[emoji849] I think the rules about strangers applies to all ages, and genders. Last cruise there was this guy who was there every time I turned around. He causally chatted my husband and i up. Fast forward next days he approaches me outside windjammer. Says oh I have some spa stuff for you. Come back to my cabin with me [emoji33]... I told him no! I have to give my husband his pills.. I told my Besty bartender in casino and she took care of the situation.. saying the crew knows there are cameras everywhere it's the other guests one needs to watch. My two cents. Lol-
