Rare cruisequeen4ever Posted February 4, 2017 #1 Share Posted February 4, 2017 How long does it take to get from Venice to Murano via vaporetto? From Murano to Burano? And from Burano back to Venice? I thought I had heard the vaporetto is the slow boat to China mode of transport, but if I'm understanding the timetable correctly, it doesn't seem to take long to get between the islands. hawkeyetlse Posted February 4, 2017 #2 Share Posted February 4, 2017 It depends where you leave from in Venice and which line you take. Some are very fast, some are "slow boats" that take the long way around and stop at every dock on the way. If you're already on the north side of Venice (Fondamente Nove), you can get to Murano in like 10 or 15 minutes. From your cruise ship or from San Marco, it may take more than an hour. Burano is quite a bit further away than Murano, like another 30 minutes, so the trip all the way to Venice is maybe 45 minutes (and that's just to Fondamente Nove, which is surely not your final destination). And you will likely have to wait 5 or 10 minutes or sometimes longer for each vaporetto. That said, it's generally a very easy and reliable mode of transportation and you can definitely visit both islands in one day.

Rare Hlitner Posted February 5, 2017 #4 Share Posted February 5, 2017 Do not underestimate the time it takes to get out to Burano (our favorite island in the Lagoon). From the cruise port, using the People Mover to the Piazale Roma and then vaporettos to Burano,....it can take up to 1 1/2 hours (one way). The actual time depends on making a connection to the #12 line at Fondamante Nove. Its why we suggest that folks go out to Burano in the morning, and then work their way back (via Murano) later in the day. Hank
Rare cruisequeen4ever Posted February 5, 2017 Author #5 Share Posted February 5, 2017 Thank you, Hiltner. Doesn't the vaporetto stop at Murano before Burano, though? Sent from my iPhone using Forums
mapleleaves Posted February 5, 2017 #6 Share Posted February 5, 2017 veniceforvisitors is a great resource. They have an 11pg directory for Murano information, including this page about specific routes to take. http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/articles/murano_transportation.htm We were near St Marks so we took the waterbus from Zaccaria to the Colonna stop on Murano (40 minutes). We had an ACTV pass so we also took the water bus to the Museo stop, wandered around the residential areas, had lunch on a canal, then went back to St Marks. Here's the Burano info, which indicates a 30 minute ride from Murano. http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/articles/venice-islands-tour-burano.htm And the main index for veniceforvisitors so you can find other useful info: http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/articles/vi-index.htm
Rare Hlitner Posted February 6, 2017 #7 Share Posted February 6, 2017 Thank you, Hiltner. Doesn't the vaporetto stop at Murano before Burano, though? Sent from my iPhone using Forums Yes it does (unless they have changed the routes). The #12 stops at Murano on its way to Burano...and also stops at Murano on its way back from Burano. My suggestion is to simply go all the way to Burano...as your first stop and then stop at Murano on your way back. As a very long time independent traveler it comes down to our simple philosophy of going to your furthest point first! Hank
Rare cruisequeen4ever Posted February 6, 2017 Author #8 Share Posted February 6, 2017 Thank you, Hank. My hubby was thinking the same thing. Burano is our main focus anyway. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

hawkeyetlse Posted February 8, 2017 #13 Share Posted February 8, 2017 If you want to be very organized, download the timetables and aim for specific connections to the islands. The line 12 only runs every 30 minutes, and arriving at Fondamente Nove to discover that you just missed it is very frustrating when you have only a few hours in port. You can also go directly to Murano from Piazzale Roma without changing lines at F.te Nove (line 4.2). From there, you can decide if you want to get the line 12 and continue on to Burano, or visit Murano first. Depending on the timetables and where you get off the vaporetto, you can see a little of Murano in both directions. Keep in mind that there are many different stops at Piazzale Roma, a couple at Fondamente Nove, and all around Murano, and you need to pick the right one to catch the line you want going in the right direction. You could probably wing it by just turning up and asking people, but a little advance preparation will help maximize your sightseeing/eating/shopping time. Rare cruisequeen4ever Posted February 9, 2017 Author #14 Share Posted February 9, 2017 Thank you, hawkeyetlse. Thankfully we will be doing this the day before our cruise, so we will have more flexibility in timing. I wish we could depart from San Marcos Square after our morning tour, but we were at least able to plot out our route to grab lunch at Dal Moro's (was Alfredo's when we went there before) and then meander our way to Fondamente Nove on foot. Sent from my iPhone using Forums When you get to Fondamente Nove, it can a bit tricky to find the pier that has the boats to Burano. As you look out at the Lagoon, the pier you want is far towards you left (I recall you even have to cross a foot bridge) and not near the other vaporetto pier (where the #1 and #2 berth). agabbymama Posted February 12, 2017 #17 Share Posted February 12, 2017 Not sure when you are going, but we were there the end of October, and it was stormy and rainy. We made it to Murano, but all vaporetto to Burano were cancelled. It took us twice as long to return to San Marco as the outbound trip took. The lagoon was so choppy, that little vaporetto was really chugging in the wind. We were disappointed, but if we had followed Hank's scenario, we would have been stranded on Burano. So just be aware of the weather. When we left San Marco, there was no information that the trip to Burano would be later cancelled. But at least we had a couple of hours on Murano. We were eating lunch at a canal side pizza place when the heavens opened. The varporetto came and we left back to San Marco. It was a bad time to visit Venice, as the flooding was really bad that year. Hope you have better luck and enjoy your visit.
Rare cruisequeen4ever Posted February 13, 2017 Author #18 Share Posted February 13, 2017 Agabbymama, that's too bad! We are going in the summer, so the weather shouldn't be too stormy. Venice gets some serious flooding in the fall and winter!! I've seen pics of people walking on elevated planks. Rare fabnfortysomething Posted March 25, 2017 #20 Share Posted March 25, 2017 there is another option The Alilaguna line do an escorted tour from St Marks at various times of day which visits Murano Burano and Torcello it costs about 20 euros per person and gives you limited time at each island with guided tours to the glass factory on Murano the lace factory on Burano and a visit to the deserted church and walk along canal on Torcello the ticket booth is reached by walking right out of St Marks with the Guidecca canal in front of you you will come to a tree lined area with lots of souvenir stalls and that's where the ticket booth/dock is located You can also book via 3rd party operator Viator which is a similar price to booking direct
