ssawjo Posted February 8, 2017 #1 Share Posted February 8, 2017 We are cruising to PNG this April and I would like to exchange either US dollars or AU dollars for some Kina to use while in PNG. We are staying a few days at the Shangri-La Hotel before leaving. Any suggestions for a nearby location to do the exchange? Thanks, Bill & Kathi
Vader1111 Posted February 8, 2017 #2 Share Posted February 8, 2017 Best bet is probably to pre-order through Travelex, and arrange to collect the currency from an outlet near your hotel.
Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted February 9, 2017 #3 Share Posted February 9, 2017 You'll probably need to pre-order it as most foreign exchange places don't stock it on a regular basis. Don't order it through Amex though, their exchange rate was a complete rip-off.
Rare MicCanberra Posted February 9, 2017 #4 Share Posted February 9, 2017 Definitely ordering it is the way to go. If your itinerary is going to Rabaul or Port Moresby first. then you may be able to use an ATM and get a cash advance, (I not sure if they will have any cash in them or are accessible to the port/dock.) Beanb41 Posted February 9, 2017 #5 Share Posted February 9, 2017 When I saw the title of this thread I thought some kiwis were going to Sydney and wanted to buy some spiny sea urchins which are a delicacy for some . These sea urchins are called kina

You can't rely on that. On the cruise I did one of the banks had people come onboard to sell Kina (at a much better rate than Amex, by the way) but they ran out before 9:30am. It was a Sunday so banks were shut, and all the ATMs ran out as well from what I heard. Much better to get some before leaving Sydney.

Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted February 9, 2017 #8 Share Posted February 9, 2017 Yes. I just thought I'd expand on why it isn't a good idea to rely on getting some Kina in PNG.
Sportfisher Posted February 9, 2017 #9 Share Posted February 9, 2017 We used small denomination Aus notes with no problems in PNG. There was no local Kina available on our Princess cruise ship. Sent from my iPad using Forums
Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted February 9, 2017 #10 Share Posted February 9, 2017 We used small denomination Aus notes with no problems in PNG. There was no local Kina available on our Princess cruise ship. The problem with using AUD is that it is very difficult and very expensive for them to change it to Kina, especially those that live on the smaller islands. We noticed quite a few locals begging for people to change the AUD they had for Kina.
ssawjo Posted February 11, 2017 Author #11 Share Posted February 11, 2017 Thank you everyone for your replies and ideas. I will look around in the states to see if there is place to order some Kina. If I fail, I will make some arrangement in Sydney to obtain some. I'll have a few days before sailing. Bill

Vader1111 Posted February 11, 2017 #13 Share Posted February 11, 2017 If you do pre-order through Travelex, make the order on the internet. Their internet exchange rates are much better than what they offer in the shops. Sent from my SM-T713 using Tapatalk
