Adding on Insurance

You are better off NOT buying the insurance from the ship

You did yourself a favor without realizing it

Just buy 3rd party insurance

Google travel insurance and figure out what you need

Cover all your nonrefundable costs plus airfare if needed.

Also you will get a better policy for less $$$$ than the ship would have given you

However if you are set on buying a policy from the ship yes you can add it on now

We use tripinsurancestore.com - also allows you to compare different policies and costs. Their customer service is also great - will answer any questions and give you recommendations if you are unsure of what you need. Their prices were significantly less than NCL and our original TA.

Definitely do third party insurance. Unless you need cancel for any reason or pre-existing condition coverage... there's really no need to purchase it until you purchase a non-refundable expense; i.e., either when u purchase airfare or make final payment. Right now if something comes up there's no cost to cancel; so you'd be out the insurance amount for no reason. However, if you do need cancel for any reason or pre-existing coverage those usually have to be purchased within a certain number of day if booking the trip.

It appears that the OP is a fellow Canadian. In my experience, the rules, availability, Ts and Cs etc of travel insurance can be different between Canada and the US, and not all companies in the US will cover Canadians. Still, there are lots of insurers available up here, even the credit card companies if you've their card to pay for the trip.

Good luck and have a great cruise ;o)

That was my next question...do these websites mentioned cover Canadians? I will check with the credit card we used to pay for the trip to see what their coverage is.

If we did need to cancel it would be due to work issues that may arise 'if' my husband gets a new job...nothing to do with any pre-existing health isssues.

So, if I understand correctly, if we cancel before final payment date we will get fully reimbursed? Does it matter if we have already paid in full or if we booked through another agency/TA?

steve is a wealth of info

OP please dont buy the cruise line insurance. even a side by side comparison of the limits alone will convince you not to buy it. the private insurance covers more and costs less.

I quite agree, cruise line insurance is much more expensive. One thing they do offer, and most 3rd party insurers probably don't, is cancel for any reason insurance which is important for some people. With my 91 year old father's health, the extra cost is balanced against knowing if anything happens, we won't lose our shirts when we have to back out of a cruise (as we've had to do in the past). We ALWAYS take the Princess insurance for this very coverage, as they actually offer a full 100% credit back on another cruise if you have to cancel. I notice that NCL's standard is only 75% credit, and can go up to 90% at much higher cost. Last time I checked, finding this type of insurance from 3rd parties was tough, especially for us Canadians.

Some US insurers will cover us, many won't. I mentioned this as a heads-up, before you start to get too into the details of an insurer's offerings, check first thing if they will even cover Canadians so you don't waster your time. And be thankful that you ARE in Canada proper. We here in the Democratic Socialist People's Republic of Quebec have an even tougher time finding this kind of insurance, as many Canadian insurers can't, or won't, offer insurance to Quebecers. We have some very strange government rules regarding insurance here, making many policies unavailable to us.

Avoid April Travel. Horrible customer service while husband was in a Belgium hospital. Took months to pay trip interruption, then they tried to short me $1300. Now, five months later, I'm still not hearing from them about not paying the six thousand dollar hospital bill. Bought through Online Vacation Center, who have repeatedly told me this never happens with this company. Go third party. I thought the travel agent would be a help if there was a problem. They got their commission. They're gone

i forgot about 90% thing with NCL however, the remainder of the terms are bad compared to the 500K of medical that global assist offered me for 191 bucks.

also global assist does do the 75% cancel for any reason if you buy in 14 days from booking

Cancel for any reason (CAR) insurance is ABSOLUTELY available through third party insurance companies - I looked into that for our upcoming trip. We were covered with the regular insurance we bought in case of work issues or health issues. We are most concerned with medical and emergency insurance - such as needing to be airlifted off the ship. In the past, we hadn't really considered that, but we witnessed that happening to someone in each of our last two cruises - and the cost for an emergency medical evacuation can easily bankrupt someone ($50K and up not including hospital and other costs).

True about avoiding 'packaged' insurance. Anything offered at purchase time by an airline or cruise line will be convenient but extremely poor value for money.

Check if your credit card gives you travel insurance when paying for a flight or cruise - mine does so effectively free insurance. I think most gold/platinum cards have this nowadays don't they?

And I did find and read the fine print - the cover is pretty good, including the all important unlimited medical and worldwide evacuation air ambulance.

So far I have called NCL and they will cover 75% for $129 each or 90% for $179 (cruise fare only). US funds, so about $168 each or $234 each.

I also spoke with our local insurance provider that we deal with for car and home insurance. They deal with a company called Allianz out of Ontario, Canada and they will cover 100% of the cruise fare for $419.04.

I must purchase with NCL before final payment date of May 11...so I have time to shop around and compare policies.

We don't know what your cruise fare is, so it is hard to tell if those are good prices. Definitely shop around and compare insurance companies and policies - you can find good deals out there for good coverage.

Good Point....it was just under $2400.00 US($3200.00 CAD) total for cruise and then gratuities for the UBP.
