Disembark as an Elite on the Summit

We don't need to rush off the boat, planning breakfast at Blu, go to the Elite lounge, disembark when it's our turn. What's a reasonable time to be off the ship in your own humble opinion?

Or will we be just standing waiting in lines forever, better to try early self disembarking?

I guess it depends on when they want you out of your stateroom, then how long you want to just sit around and drink coffee in the Elite lounge, usually Tuscan Grill. Getting off between 8:00-8:30 should be a reasonable time in my opinion.

Thank you Wine-O (LOVE)...by reasonable, do you mean the crowds who try to get off as soon as possible will be gone, my only goal is to be on the way to FLL by 9:20am...

We usually disembark at 8:30 from the lounge relaxed.

We tend to do the same....used to leave Elite lounge refreshed and relaxed. Now we do the same with Michael's Club. We rarely travel far first day after disembarking, no matter where in the world we are. Not only do we leave unstressed and with shorter queues we hope by not being in the 7.30 crowd with flights to catch we are allowing those who need to disembark quickly the chance to do so. Last Caribbean cruise the concierge was in contact with someone shore side...they let her know the queues were still massive so I sipped a final Bellini.....

Another bonus of waiting a little later to depart is there is less of a scramble for car hire shuttle buses, hotel shuttle buses....

Hope you don't mind me high-jacking the thread a little bit..but I have a similar question.. This will be my first cruise ever, so I'm not elite or diamond anything lmao. Please tell me it's feasible to dock at Cape Liberty at 8am and get to EWR in time for a domestic flight out at 12:45pm. I figured this would be enough time, but having a confirmation would feel nice :) With that being said..should we opt for "self disembarkation"? What are the differences in the way you exit the ship?

You will have plenty of time even without doing self debarkation.

Last October on the Summit, the Elite Lounge was packed to the gills with every type of cruiser possible. So much for it being an Elite Lounge when it's coupled with early walk-offs. It was ridiculously crowded.

There are often several hundred elites and many can be walk offs

As noted, a lot depends on the port. We relaxed in the Elite Lounge and got off ship at Port everglades around 8:30am...it took us an hour to get inside the building! once inside the building...it only took another 30 minutes!

In Newark...we disembarked when Federal employees were having "problems" with mgmt. One of the agents while on the job, spent an extremely long time going over paperwork and chatting with passengers essentially slowing down the entire process.

The answer to your question is...It all depends!

No problem. Plenty of time to spare for a 12:45pm flight.

Either method of disembarkation should get you to the airport with time to spare.

Self disembark, as the name implies, means you have to be able to carry all of your belongings off the ship without crew assistance. There is a designated area where you wait for disembarkation to begin. Once off the ship, you proceed to immigration/customs and then you are on the way to the airport.

Traditional disembarkation - You will get luggage tags and will have to have your luggage outside your stateroom door the last evening of the cruise. Times are often different ship to ship but after dinner is a good time frame. The next day you take your carry on/off luggage to a designated public waiting area. When your disembark number is called, you leave the ship. Disembark numbers are assigned based on information that you provide - flight time. Once in the terminal you locate a sign with your disembark number and your luggage should be that area. Collect your luggage and proceed to immigration/customs.

Many people prefer to self disembark for the simple reason that some luggage gets "lost". People in a hurry claim the wrong luggage or just take someone else's luggage.

Luggage rarely gets lost. Tie a brightly colored ribbon to your luggage on every handle if it is black luggage. Then no one will take it accidentally.

Take your time disembarking. No need to wait on long lines. You will have ample time to check-in at the airport. The airport is only about 25 minutes away (even allowing for some traffic on local roads.)

All this is assuming your going to Newark.

EWR = Newark Liberty International Airport

Just to follow up, disembarked this morning off the Summit. Had breakfast at Blu at 7:15, were scheduled for 8:15, cleared to leave by 7:45am. We just finished our breakfast, walked off but a bit of a line up for customs, in Uber by 8:45...Plenty of time for 11:35am flight to DTW

We find the same thing and never use the "special" debarkation lounge. We eat breakfast, go back to our cabin to get our hand luggage and walk off the ship - no lines. Usually we leave around 8:00-8:30.
