Cape Liberty to JFK disembarkation tour?

Recommended Posts

We will disembark at Cape Liberty in the morning. Our flight departs from JFK at midnight.

Is there any private tour we can do to enjoy NYC? The ship's disembarkation transfer is just a drive through and not interesting.

Thank you for advise.

What exact date and day of the week would you be doing this?

Take a car service or a taxi from the Cape Liberty Taxi dispatcher to check your bags at Schwartz Travel on West 37th St in Manhattan (http://schwartztravel.com/_index.php) and plan a day in New York. Then take a car service or the airport bus ( https://www.nycairporter.com/) from nearby 42nd street to JFK in the early evening.

A general private tour is going to be very pricey. Instead you could ride the HoHo bus and stop where you like. Is there anything in particular you want to see? You can't do everything in a day, so consider focusing on just a few things.

Wow.... very happy to read your insight! Grateful to know that we can store our baggages, and yes, we'll gladly do the HOHO bus.

We will be there on Monday, Oct 23rd 2017. We will be very careful with the traffic time.

Thank you, thank you again.

If you use Schwartz you can walk to Times Square or the Empire State Building and Macy's. From there you can take subway to Battery Park/ World Trade Center area or up to museums and Central Park. As 138 suggested, narrow it down to what you want to do. A HoHo might not be necessary

You can plan ahead on that day by having the car service (Carmel or Dial 7, latter's rates usually a little higher) to pick you up in front of Schwartz with your already collected luggage, and enjoy a ride out to JFK. Plan for an early dinner in Manhattan as airport food prices are crazy high, even for a basic fast food sandwich ... unless you have airline club membership to access for your choice of carrier & terminal.

Being a weekday evening commute with rush hour traffic, allow 2 hours of trip time to reach the airport, shouldn't take more than 90 minutes except in bad weather & unusually bad highway conditions, etc.

I would plan on leaving midtown by 7 PM, reaching JFK before 9 PM for 3 to 3.5 hours of generous time to get thru baggage screening, check-in, TSA security & boarding gate ... and possibly some duty-free shopping (known your prices at home & custom allowance, etc.) - recheck as you get closer to your sailing/flight date on airline's recommended time, tc.

All JFK terminals now have free WiFi for use by travelers, making it easier to pass the time while waiting. Terminal 1 is the main "hub" for most int'l and Asian carriers like Air China, Korean Air, and Thai Airways, etc. and is very, very busy with lots of oversea jumbo jets taking off around midnight - always crowded & busy with lines,

We'll keep the timing in mind. We certainly don't want to miss our flight back home.... 😀

Best way, with luggage in tow, would be to use Dial 7 or Carmel car service to pickup at Cape Liberty to take you into Manhattan, directly to Schwartz Luggage - then, you are free to sightsee for 6 or 7 hours, light lunch & early dinner before heading up to JFK for the evening. Should have time to stop at Rockefeller Center/Plaza & other landmarks nearby in between Times Sq. & Central Park.

Assuming you will have access to cellular services once the ship arrive back in NYC (our "home" signal is active & strong by the time we sail near VZ Bridge, up the Lower Bay toward Staten Island & Brooklyn (Coney Island area on starboard side) - as it's another 30+ minutes before docking at CL. That's plenty of time (another 60 to 90+ minutes before ship is cleared & walk-off into the terminal to clear immigration/custom & pickup luggage, etc.) to call for car service - with about 2 hours or more to request a pickup. Let them know you will call again when ready for actual pickup by the driver outside the terminal area (and, if you have cellular data - they have their own free mobile APP to track the vehicle & driver assigned/dispatched.)

Carmel has digital online discount codes, no printed coupons needed - will save you $3, $4 or $5 off each ride - come around before you sail and we will upload/share those ... as a regular, they email them to us often to share/pass along free. Dial 7 too, I believe.

FYI on dining options - Koreantown in nearby in the mid/low 30's Street around Broadway & 6th Avenue, good place for lunch. Little India/Bombay is further East - around 3rd Avenue in the upper 20's - follow the curry odor as many yellow taxis will be off-duty taking their breaks.

This is the current code, they change them around but if you install the app next September before leaving, it will go straight to your email.

We will have a similar situation but arriving at Manhattan cruise terminal with a 3:45 pm flight out of JFK on a Thursday. Will we have enough time for some sightseeing after we disembark before we need to get to the airport or is it best to try to get a late disembark and go straight to the airport? Is Schwartz' luggage storage within walking distance (doesn't appear so on the map) from the cruise terminal?

Thanks!

What is your cruiseline & ship arrival date? Flying out of JFK - domestic, I assume (as it's recommended to plan to arrive for check-in, with luggage, at "T" minus 2 hours) Weekday travel to JFK can be a pain as midday traffic can be worsen by road work & construction.

What is on your short list of must-see for sightseeing?

Just finished a 7 days NCL cruise on the GEM, ship was late disembarkation last Saturday, pax were just coming off the ship, starting around 9:30 & late ones didn't come off till 11 AM. This morning, we returned early/on-time & were docked at 7 AM, vessel cleared & self walk-off began at 7:40 AM. We used priority disembark (with escort at 8:30) - picked up our luggage inside the terminal & porter services speed us thru CBP, outside & in our car service (Carmel) at 9:15 - slowed by a restroom stop and home at 10 AM (past LGA, a 30 minutes ride thru the Bronx instead, a faster route)

I would allow at least 90 minutes to 2 hours to get to JFK with traffic (LIRR/subway to Jamaica & transfer with AirTrain to JFK terminals is an option, if you can manage luggage traveling light) + 2 hours for airport security & check-in, etc. That would meant leaving no later than 11:45 to 12 noon, depending on where you are in the city (Manhattan)

Schwartz is really not in easy walkind distance from MCT, so you could be looking at as little as 2 hours to 3 hours at most ... to do everything once outside the pier/terminal, including to/from Schwartz + lunch on the go.

Please share a little more details so the folks can help brainstorm a bit more with a more focused plan for you to consider. Or, as you say, sit back & relax, be the last to be off the ship, work your way leisurely to JFK and get a pass for the airport club lounge if warranted.

If it's a nice day and you are in pretty good physical shape, you can walk to Times Square area and people watch while sitting in the seating area. The downside is that it is a Mecca for pick pockets so you must be vigilant.

I'm trying to avoid taking the $99 disembark ride to jfk as well. But right now, as a solo traveler my biggest problem is figuring out how to get from jfk to the pier. I was going to do a sJared shuttle to Newark but not sure from that point. Train would be an option but I'll have luggage.

Please give us more details. Are you flying in the day before the cruise? What date? Where are you staying? What date and time is your return flight from JFK?

Bottom line it's not cheap to go to JFK from Cape Liberty. Does the $99 include a tour of Manhattan with a drop off at JFK? If so, it is a steal for a solo traveler unless you can manage your luggage on accessible public transit.

Folks will make suggestions when we know more details.
