NCL Pre-purchased OBC Certificates

Going on our first NCL cruise in a couple weeks and we have pre-bought some OBC credit from their website. It says the OBC will be in certificate form and I requested "delivery" of our boarding day. Exactly how are those redeemed? We're used to Princess where you take them to the casino and they give you cash. Not sure if NCL works the same way. Thanks for the help.

I'm curious, they don't just put it on your card? Did you buy it to have cash? Was thinking of buying some for my MIL but not sure I want a certificate or cash, thought we could just put it on her card.

it will be on posted on your keycard/ship card account on boarding day. that certificate form is most likely a receipt saying they added the obc to your account that they put in your room/mail slot

Awesome thanks. I was hoping it wasn't going to involve having to stand in line at the passengers service desk to apply them to our account.

They are automatically posted to your onboard account. No need to stand in lines.

Awesome, thanks. Another question though, if the OBC you have is for the casino how does that work? Do you need to go to cashier to get cash or can you use your card? And if you get the cash do you pay the 3%? TIA

Just be aware that it can take a couple of days to actually appear on your account. On one occasion mine didn't show up after 3 days and I took my confirmation to guest services and they looked into it for me and it was added soon afterwards.

 

So, don't panic if it isn't there straight away, but take your confirmation with you in case there is any problem.

My experience has been that the OBC was added to my account and the certificate in my room just informed me of that. It was used for any charges to my room account - spa, Food Republic, etc.

 

If you take cash from the casino there is a 3% fee I believe. So if you go to the casino cashier and ask for $300 you will have a $309 charge on your account and your OBC will be applied to that. You dont need to use the cash in the casino it's just where you have to get it to have it charged to your account. If you take cash from a ship ATM your OBC wouldn't be applied to that

 

I like to purchase OBC throughout the year (i book a year in advance), use the OBC against the charges to my room when I sail, and then when I receive my final bill it will be lower than it would be without the pre purchased OBC. There is a limit to OBC you can purchase which was $1000 when I sailed Dec 2016.

Can you use the obc in the casino to play without getting the cash. Just use your card in the slots?

You can use your card in the machine but have to transfer money from your account to the machine so will be charged the 3% I think. You can check on board to be sure and also policies are always changing and might be different than when I sailed in Dec.

In the casino if you get cash or use your card in the slots or get chips at a table you will be charged the 3% even though the OBC is your refundable cash.

However, if you charge a tournament fee to your onboard account there is no 3% fee.

I plan to purchase $1000 in OBC through the Amex offer to pay for gratuities and cruise-next certificates. My TA is also giving me $100 in OBC. Will I go over the limit? A rep from NCL told me no, the TA 's didn't count. Anyone know if this is true?

It's true. Only the obc you purchase is limited to $1000.

The obc from NCL and/or TA is not included in that limit.

 

Instead of buying obc for the gratuities you could simply pre-pay them.

You are limited to purchasing $1000.00 in refundable OBC per reservation however no OBC you have given counts towards it. I purchased $1000 refundable OBC for our upcoming cruise in September and also have been given $650 in non refundable OBC from NCL.
