Rare vino100 Posted March 23, 2017 #1 Share Posted March 23, 2017 After reading all the great advice on CC we finally decided the best way to get to Venice from Rome is the train. I do have a few questions . 1. We are staying at the Albergo del Senato , how far is the termini station? 2. How early should we arrive at the station. 3. Will we be dragging our suitcases over train tracks? 4. Any other helpful tips. Thanks

Will we be dragging our suitcases over train tracks? 4. Any other helpful tips. Thanks We've done this three times. Great way to go between Rome and Venice. From Albergo del Senato, Termini is about 10-15 minute cab ride. Trains runs very close to schedule. Around 30 minutes before departure should be enough time. If you want to give yourself more time there is a nice cafe at the front of the terminal. You should leave from one of the main tracks which are close to the front of the terminal. No tracks to cross. All trains are on the same level. Book one of the fast trains with fewer stops to Venezia Santa Lucia station. You will need to handle your luggage with several steps onto the train. Don't let anyone help with your luggage. It may disappear or at least a tip will be demanded. Consider stopping in Florence for a few hours. It's midway on the trip. Enjoy Rome and Venice. Rick
Rare cruisemom42 Posted March 23, 2017 #3 Share Posted March 23, 2017 Good advice above. A couple other tips: There's a taxi stand just on the other side of the Pantheon (from the hotel), you can either walk over there with your luggage or ask the hotel to call them over. There's no point getting to the train station too early, as you won't be able to go to the track (binario) until it's assigned, which usually doesn't happen until 15 minutes or less in advance. As the OP says, the fast trains usually are not that much of a walk.

If you want to grab something to eat on the train (if you don't want to go to the dining car), there are a couple of little stands facing the train platforms where you can grab a panini, some bottled waters, some pastry... buchhalm Posted March 23, 2017 #5 Share Posted March 23, 2017 (edited) In Rome Station (all of them) be very aware of scruffy looking individuals, often kids, loitering and approaching you to "help with bags". They are very persistent. Trying to grab your stuff and carry it 20 meters and then want money. These pests are also often very talented pickpockets and are mostly from Albania or Romania and the Italian police is trying to keep them in check as much as possible. What did you mean "book one of the fast trains with fewer stops to Venezia Santa Lucia station." How do you decipher the fast train from the regional, slower trains? I've been to the Trenatilia site and they don't have August dates yet. I assume I won't be able to book until 90 days before, is that correct? We are staying at B&B Aquavenice (close to the train station in Venice). It's pretty convenient and we've been here before. I believe we get the yellow boat line to and from VCE. We did this 3 years ago, but I could use some advice as I'm not sure my memory is correct.

Should be around 3 hours 45 minutes from Rome to Venice. You can click on the commute time and it will show the number of stops. The commuter trains will be considerably longer. Venezia S.L. is the station by the grand canal. Venezia Mestre is still on the mainland. I don't remember when the schedules open but 90 days sounds about right. The schedules don't change much so you can look at what's open to get an idea of the schedule. Booking early using gets a cheaper price. Don't know what the yellow line is. There is a vaporetto stop outside the train station.

The closest vaporetto stop is San Marcuola-Casino, you can reach that from the train station with either the #1 (direction Lido, second stop) or the #2 (direction San Marco, first stop) vaporetto from the train station. Line 1 timetable here: http://actv.avmspa.it/sites/default/files/Orario%20linea%201%20dal%201%20aprile%202017.pdf Line 2 timetable here: http://actv.avmspa.it/sites/default/files/Orario%20linea%202%20dal%20%201%20aprile%202017.pdf From the airport to this B&B you'd use the Alilaguna orange line to the Guglie stop: http://www.alilaguna.it/linee/linea-arancio

Be vigilant and mind your belongings! Last time I was at Termini, there were personnel in Trenitalia sweaters or windbreakers at the head of the binario for a departure. They were looking at tickets and not letting people through without them. I never let anyone "help with bags" anywhere in the world, including the USA. If you cannot handle your bags, including lifting them up and off of the train, you either need to pack lighter or consider alternative transportation (my opinion). dkata Posted April 4, 2017 #11 Share Posted April 4, 2017 Thank you all for the valuable information. I have my tickets and now I have to wait patiently for May to get here. :D My two cents, On the Right of the Termini, you can walk through the clothing store with your luggage, out the other end of the store, past the luggage storage area and walk straight ahead to the Central mercado roma. It's like an open food mall with the restaurants all around the sides and open seating tables and chairs in the middle. Grab a table in the middle and have one of you watch the luggage while you go up to the food counters and order your food. And yes, they speak English. There are also nice bathrooms located here on the far end. they wanted 1 Euro for the bathrooms at the entrance but we never had to pay. I'd wait here in the open food court, seated at a table until 15- 20 minutes before your departure. There is no need to wait by the main train gates until you know what gate your train is assigned too.

euro cruiser Posted April 5, 2017 #14 Share Posted April 5, 2017 Are there dining cars on the train or food vendors ? If you go to the Trenitalia site and pull up your train, then click on the "i" (in the box with the type of train and train number) you'll see the list of services. Most Frecce trains have a bar car where you can get something to drink and prepackaged panini or rolls. If you want something decent to eat, carry it on with you. Supposedly, the Frecce train Bistro/bar car has salads and some hot entree now, also. But, I always carry on - there are some good places right at Termini (and the Mercato Centrale Roma) to get food to go.

Corgidawgga Posted April 22, 2017 #23 Share Posted April 22, 2017 You have made a great choice for your hotel. I stayed there last January and they are very helpful at the front desk. Do take a taxi just a few steps across the Piazza. The cobblestones are murder even with wheeled luggage, but easily done. The front desk will also book your ticket for you for a very few extra Euros if you find the train website confusing. The fast trains run frequently and you can choose your seat online. The food/drink on the train is snackish. However, straight across the square from you hotel is a lovely "deli" in the front part of the meat store. They make delicious panini to go and I highly recommend them. They are sold by the pound if I remember. Also have drinks and wonderful pastries. You can have those on the train. Finally, (whew) do not miss the roof top bar on at the Senato. If you are lucky, you will be up there almost eye level when the church bells ring. Perfect Rome! treesah Posted April 22, 2017 #25 Share Posted April 22, 2017 Hi everyone! If I have two days in Rome is it reasonable to spend one day for a trip to Venice? How long does the road take? I mean the fastest way to get back and forth. Venice is my big dream but we don't have it in our cruise itinerary, only Rome and Florence this time.. It's doable. You can catch the 6:50 train in Rome Termini and arrive in Venice St. Lucia at 10:35. Spend the day in Venice meandering all over and return to Rome, leaving Venice at 7:25 pm arriving at 11:10 pm. A very long day. I would do it but then again I'm a Venice fanatic.
