Dr Alan Posted March 30, 2017 #1 Share Posted March 30, 2017 So we're from the UK and just realised that our first at sea day for our Caribbean cruise will be September 11. Should we expect any particular recognition of it to occur on board. We're sensitive to the fact that the majority of people on board will be from the US and are not sure what to expect. tahqa Posted March 30, 2017 #2 Share Posted March 30, 2017 No, there will not be any recognition onboard -- at least so far I haven't seen any.
cindivan Posted March 30, 2017 #3 Share Posted March 30, 2017 I doubt there would be any formal recognition. However it wouldn't surprise me if there was casual discussion among those aboard. If you find yourself in the midst of Americans (or others) taking about and feel the need to do more than remain silent, I would recommend saying something like "I can't begin to understand what it must have been like for Americans that day." Acknowledging their pain, showing you care, without being intrusive and acting like you know more or have advice for anyone. (Taken from advice on what to say to grieving people. Not exactly the same. But suffices in this situation) Sent from my iPad using Forums

EleventyBangBang Posted March 30, 2017 #5 Share Posted March 30, 2017 I disembarked/flew home from my last cruise on Sept 11th last year. There was no mention of it on the ship (but, it was disembarkation day, so I wasn't expecting a whole lot there.) There was a "moment of silence" at the airport. dwayneb236 Posted March 30, 2017 #6 Share Posted March 30, 2017 Was on a Carnival cruise one year on Sept 11. Can't specifically remember anything done by any cruise personnel. Not really necessary. We all have own ways of remembering or not.
Rare Captain Funtime Posted March 30, 2017 #7 Share Posted March 30, 2017 An American Flag lapel pin ?? I have some 911 pins but most likely difficult to find. trvlmil Posted March 30, 2017 #8 Share Posted March 30, 2017 (edited) Sailed on the Carnival Miracle out of NY on 9/11/2012 and they did a very nice memorial when we passed the WTC site. Edited March 30, 2017 by trvlmil Date
cruzinlady1947 Posted March 30, 2017 #9 Share Posted March 30, 2017 We got back to New York 2 days before 9/11, 2001. The following year, we were on another cruise out of New York during the first anniversary of 9/11. On the actual anniversary day, we were on a bus tour in a port in Canada. At the time of day that the plane hit the first tower, our tour guide had the bus driver stop the bus on the side of the road we had a moment of silence. I was really impressed by the gesture. I love Canada. We try to cruise there every year. Sent from my iPad using Forums
lakelorain Posted March 30, 2017 #10 Share Posted March 30, 2017 We had a moment of silence many years ago. I think it was on the Jewel of the Seas. Not sure if they still do that.
HallOfPromise Posted March 30, 2017 #11 Share Posted March 30, 2017 We were on the Carnival Miracle last year and the CD did a lovely speech fallowed by a moment of silence.

rba4575489 Posted March 31, 2017 #13 Share Posted March 31, 2017 My husband and I were on the Grand Princess on 9/11/01. It was really a surreal experience.
sg1phileshipper Posted March 31, 2017 #14 Share Posted March 31, 2017 I was on Freedom in 2011 departing on 9/11. Captain Rob asked for a minute of silence during muster drill. Other than that, I have never experienced anything on a ship when I am on board that day....
Rare vacationlover_mn Posted March 31, 2017 #15 Share Posted March 31, 2017 Thanks for your sensitivity! (If there was a proper emoticon for being appreciative, I would put it here) Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app
Motorman23 Posted March 31, 2017 #16 Share Posted March 31, 2017 (edited) I was on a transatlantic cruise sept 11, 2011 and we were at sea and the captain had a moment of silence during his announcements for the 10th anniversary. That was the only time I saw anything and I have been on three cruises on sept 11. Being a New Yorker who worked in emergency medical services during that time, I took it as very meaningful but I would understand others who don't think much about it anymore. Thank you for asking, I appreciate it. Mike Former EMT Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD Edited March 31, 2017 by Motorman23
Dr Alan Posted April 3, 2017 Author #17 Share Posted April 3, 2017 Thanks for all the responses. It was a large news item at the time in the UK and it hit us hard so I can't imagine what it was like there. We will be sensitive and raise a toast to all. JTBCruiser Posted April 3, 2017 #18 Share Posted April 3, 2017 I just realized for our upcoming LOS, we will be on Day 2 at sea on 9/11. DW and I will have our private moment of silence and will enjoy our cruise. I was in DC during 9/11 and saw the destruction at the Pentagon. The staff went right back to work in the Pentagon the day after. The terrorist cowards failed at terrorizing Americans.
Rare BillOh Posted April 3, 2017 #19 Share Posted April 3, 2017 On a barely related note, I was on Allure the day Osama was killed. News spread pretty quickly around the ship. Its the only time I've spent on a cruise watching the news. They had CBS, CNN, and Fox news up for about 36 hours. When we got back to port about 6 days later, it was the easiest trip through customs ever, They weren't even looking at declaration forms. They may do something on big anniversaries. I was on Jewel on the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.
