Save me from Oprah

Who and what made HAL think I am going to book a cruise for some kind of Oprah experience, that I want to go to the theater after dinner to watch a BBC geographical video that I might view once but not on B 2 B cruises. That I want go to Crow's Nest for a Virtual experience as opposed to chilling out after lunch on the Promenade Deck. I don't want to experience all the high tech junk that's on my fingertips at home. Please don't bring it on board

Hmm sounds like you read the new Mariner magazine.

They're hyping the Oprah connection, but in reality she will be on the ship for just a few days in Alaska. Three other cruises will have special speakers and activities related to O magazine, but Oprah will not be there.

They're also hyping the new tech stuff. But it's mostly in the Crows Nest, so it will be possible to ignore. If you like to spend a lot of time in the Crows nest as it is, you'll probably be disappointed. Otherwise, it's technology you don't need to mess with.

Absolutely, positively could not agree with you more! These changes are enough to make this Four Star Mariner start looking around at other options.

Oprah is bad, bad, bad. Why does HAL think I will book?:loudcry:

Whether we like or don't like Oprah, HAL has made a huge mistake in promoting a celeb to sell cruises. That's NOT why I cruise, and it's a real turnoff for their brand to go Hollywood instead of promoting the pleasures of cruising. If I want celebs, I will go to Vegas!

The whole Oprah thing is too New Age and high energy for me - cruises are where I get away from the daily media hype and unplug totally. HAL is making some nice marketing decisions - go with their strengths - sailing traditions and world wide ports.

The variety of evening live music options for all tastes has been a good course to take. But the hyper-screaming that is associated with the Oprah show makes no sense at all. SNL Oprah spoof - not:

Studio audiences are expected to scream. I don't expect that to carry over to a cruise. But this line from the HAL website bothers me: Thought leaders and visionaries from Oprah's hand-picked SuperSoul 100 will be on-board with provocative ideas for living your best life.

As you say, very new-age. What is a thought leader??? Sounds like brainwashing!!

I cruise to get away from it all to sit back, relax, watch the ocean, visit new lands, meet people. You're right that I don't need or want. What is a SuperSoul 100? Another example of change for the sake of change is not always good.

Any idea which ship and when she will be in Alaska? I'm hoping it's not our cruise on Eurodam May 6th.

I remember way back when Kathy Lee was used by Carnival in all of their ads and on board their ships they had life size cut outs of her. Equally annoying!

You're safe, the Alaska cruise is the Aug 11 sailing on Eurodam. Here's the link to see which four cruises are affected.

For those who say they just want to sit back and enjoy the sea and not be bothered with this, I don't think the special O activities will get in the way. I look at it like the gym. I know every ship has one. Doesn't mean I have to go there.

She's on the July 15th sailing on the Eurodam. It's about $1200.00 more for a balcony that week than the previous or following week. I'm staying far away from that sailing. We're on the 14-day Amsterdam to Alaska and so looking forward to it!

This entire Oprah thing, including her magazine, is totally disgusting to me. I immediately called my PCC to be certain that her royal highness would not be on any of my booked cruises. She confided that many others had already called with similar questions and concerns.

Why would HAL inject such a radical political figure into the joys and pleasure of cruising. We cruise to avoid such posturing. In addition, cruising is the last place I want to go to be subjected to Weight Watchers propaganda... Doesn't look like it is working for her...

So the Aug 11 is just one of the theme sailings--I just realized that it's 2018, not 2017. Funny that July 15 didn't come up in the link of O cruises. But when I checked the July 15 cruise, I saw how much more they're charging for it than for earlier or later cruises, an average of $1000 pp. The suites are all sold out for the two previous cruises, but available for July 15.

We booked the July 15th sailing on the Oosterdam (roundtrip Seattle), just before Oprah was announced. As soon as HAL announced Oprah would be on the July 16th cruise the airfare in/out of Seattle went up drastically. We had not booked our air yet so we ended up paying about $200 more than normal. Thanks Oprah! :(

Exactly. I figure I can enjoy cruising until the time they force me to go to the casino, art auctions, acupuncture seminars, tanzanite sales, Bill W meetings, bingo, digital workshops, interdenominational services, LGBT meetings, vigil masses, Sabbath services, and any of the myriad other activities that do not interest me in the least. I figure all the things I am not interested in make money for the cruise line and help keep my cruise fares low.

You can always choose to cruise on another line. Sheesh, the things people complain about.

Beats tipping, smoking, and the MDR threads:D:D

Personally, I don't think it's "complaining" to not want pay for a cruise that focuses on a politically outspoken figurehead.

Without threads like this some folks wouldn't have the option of whether or not to sail an Operah cruise.

I agree with all of the above comments... HAL is way off base getting involved with Oprah or any entertainers, celebrities... they are a big turn off in America these days ....

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Oprah isn't a radical political figure, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Based on the ads I've seen, I don't think the Oprah cruises are going to be political rallies.

As far as Weight Watchers, the company doesn't use Oprah as a mouthpiece to spew propaganda. It's a program recommended by lots of physicians, and is based on sound nutritional information. It's helped many people, including me.
