My wife and I are leaving on the Dream this Sunday. It has been several years since our last cruise, and I'm sure that some things have changed.

 

We will be bringing cash for ports, casino, bingo etc. and we want to have backup in case we run low. On our last cruise there were ATM's that were out of money by the second day. They were right next to the casino, naturally.

 

If needed, what is the best way to get cash?

I have never encountered the atm being empty...but it doesn't mean it can't happen. I agree bring extra with you and just put it on your room card. You can always go to guest services and pull off what you need. Have an awesome cruise!!

all the ports will have ATMs, some with less fees than Carnival, use a reputable bank, Scotia is avery big in the Caribbean

FYT....you can't pay cash for bingo any longer. It get put on your S&S card only.

Everything on board is charged to your room card. Cash isn't used anywhere on board.

The daily service charge (tips) are charged to your room on a daily basis The charge is about $13 per person per day. This cover your room steward , MDR staff and staff that do service that you don't see. This isn't to start war on whether to tip or not.

If I'm not mistaken you can sit down at a slot machine, stick in your S&S card and move money from your account to the machine (actually charging that money to the credit card you have linked to your S&S account). Spin or twice and then cash out. Bring the ticket to the cashier and you will get cash. No ATM fee!!!

Well, I bring $500.00 which is my budget for tips and gambling. I usually bring back home $300 - $400.00 because I don't like loosing money to the slot machine. It's just for entertainment only. Most everything on the ship, is prepaid except for some minor cash tipping on the last day, and once a person, is determined to be worthy of it.

 

As far as ports are concerned, I carry a credit card. If I buy something, I use a credit card. Occasionally, I end up buying something from a street vendor, that requires cash.

 

For those afraid of using a credit card in a foreign country, you might want to realize that using it in the USA is just as risky. So, if you have a good card, and it is compromised, you can easily get a new number, and contest any fraud. I would say, I have received at least 4 new cards in the last 10 years for fraud.

I always use my sail and sign card to get money for the slot machine. If I have cash left over at the end of the cruise I apply it to my account. This way I don't worry about not having enough cash for the ports and don't have to use the ATM.

Really? That's amazing. I have a credit card that give me 2% cash back. I can actually MAKE money at the casino (as long as I don't gamble it.) ;p

I don't believe that was the intent of their post... they were simply stating that it's good to also bring extra cash for tips (cabin steward, server from MDR, bartenders, etc.- most people like to leave a little extra in cash). At least that is the way that I read their post since OP mentioned bringing cash for ports, casino, bingo... ;)

You don't get the fee because you really aren't taking money from the credit card. You are charging the casino money to your S&S account. Then Carnival charges your credit card for any amount on your account, which could be casino money, gift shop purchases, drinks, etc.

You're CC isn't charged until the end of the cruise and we've never had any kind of additional fees on the CC other than what has been charged. Didn't matter where we used it.

You only pay the 3% if you are at one of the table games and you charge your S & S card for chips.

My comment was meant to apply to those who want to tip extra over and above the $13. Like a favorite bartender or bar waiter, wait staff that goes out of their way, cabin steward team that does extra things for you.

I'm taking $1200 for 3 of us. Probably overkill. Just wanna have fun and live it up. U only turn 50 2 or 3 times😂

Another question: We will be bringing about $600 in cash (to pay for excursions and such). So my husband isn't stuck traveling with a wad of cash, will the ship be able to change out $100's for smaller bills?

Probably , if USD they might be reluctant because there are a lot of counterfeit $100 around.
