Is it safe to get off ship in Nassau

Recommended Posts

While at the port, I've visited the Atlantis resort and also went on a Segway tour. Both were a lot of fun. I've also shopped very close to the port and felt safe. I would not venture out very far on my own. I think it's safe as long as you are in areas with a lot of people.

We cruised in February and ported in Nassau. First impression was very run down, and they had military with "big guns" standing right at the port exit. My husband was first offered drugs here. We took a taxi to Atlantis and from there decided to walk to the beach. On the way there, we were approached by two young men, who decided they would escort us. I felt very uncomfortable, but just stayed aware. We rounded the corner to the beach trail and spotted at least 20 young men standing off near a tree, which really caused me some alarm. A few of them headed towards us, one again offering my husband drugs. They followed us the short distance, and started offering to rent us some beach chairs, which we declined. After that, they left us alone, and on the way back to the port, we never had any issues. I'm not trying to scare anyone, just make you aware of the situations you might encounter and to always be alert.

We will be on the Majesty on May 3, when the ship will stay in Nassau until midnight. Since Baha Mar finally opened yesterday, we are planning to have an early dinner in the Windjammer and head there afterwards. That will put us getting back to the ship at about 10 p.m, by taxi. I have done this in the past and just wore no jewelry and remained aware of my surroundings when walking from the taxi to the ship. Anybody have any helpful hints? I wish we would be walking back with other people, but that has not happened in the past and it would be just plain luck to find others leaving Baha Mar at the same time.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I live in a small town and am very well aware that there are dangerous areas all over the world, but 45 murders in 4 months is most certainly more that what I'm accustomed to😦 I appreciate people sharing their experiences good and bad so that I can make a more informed decision.

We do want to thank you for coming back and responding to your post.

Take a ship's tour and you'll be fine. Have a great cruise!:)

Just stay on the "beaten path"...don't go wandering into neighborhoods, where you have no business being. It's no safer or more dangerous than your own town or city.

Good advise above! Don't go wandering around alone. ;)

Been to Nassau several times, once as a cruise stop and 3 other times on land vacations. Never, ever felt unsafe. On one of the land trips we asked the cab driver to take us to a true locals bar, which he did, and it was a great experience. Had a cop tell us on another trip that there is zero tolerance for crime towards tourists, and everybody knows it and knows how important tourism is. I wouldn't be worried about safety as long as you pay attention to your surroundings and avoid the bad parts of town.

i'd be more worried about the people constantly asking you , and literally standing in front of you blocking your way, just to sell their wares. thats 100% guaranteed gonna happen to you. and we made it through 2 aisles of the straw market before deciding the badgering was enough. do they think they can coerce you into buying? pushy people totally turn me off

Yeah, I say no to everyone as a general rule and somehow my entire family ended up on some stage playing drums for some tip-required photo op. It happened so fast I still can't explain it but it was annoying.

Then when we finally got out of that God-forsaken building that the Oasis dumped us out in, I still have the image of this elderly lady's face.... She was in the back seat of a van and the driver was adding more and more people to the van (well above safe capacity) and this lady's face was mashed up against the glass. Seemed like it would be a very nice tour, sitting that way, huh?

I can't think of a more wonderful day to enjoy the beautiful ship you're sailing on and have a lot of it to yourself.

Nassau can be full of pickpockets, drug dealers, people offering sex etc. Some passengers never encounter this, but it does have it's dark side.

Sounds like most cities in the US! :D

Then stay out of Philadelphia...lol...my husband and I joke every day when the news comes on, we say very sarcastically "not in Philly!" Seems like Every single night in one part or another ,there is A shooting on a good night and several on a bad night! I sometimes wonder how that city has anyone left alive!

...and clearly there is no crime in Camden or Newark or Paterson or.....!

The last time we went to Nassau, we took a "taxi tour" around the island (very worthwhile- we had the four of us in the taxi and he stopped where ever we wanted and went at our pace). He showed us a lot little neighborhoods and all of the highlights. I asked if tourists are safe to walk around, he said "Yes, tourists are our biggest industry!". We got back to the ship and my family wanted to relax, so I went for a run. I ran through a lot of the same neighborhoods that we drove through. I told my wife I would stay on the main roads, but I like exploring.

I never felt uneasy or unsafe.

We (wife, 8 y/o son and I) visited Nassau 3 years ago on our Grandeur cruise (only visit to Nassau). Despite not caring for Nassau (Too much hawking for tours and the stores), we never felt unsafe. We walked to Junkaroo Beach and had a nice lunch (at a restaurant of our choosing not at the one suggested by a local who walked part of the way with us). After lunch we went to the gardens/zoo and had a great time (we have some fantastic pictures of our son with the flamingos). We took the jitney (overcrowded as noted by some posters) back to town nd walked back to the ship. Nice day. No problem.
