Cash?

I'm finding conflicting info about getting cash onboard the Mariner. Can we get cash on our seapass?

If not are there ATMs at the ports? (Cozumel, Ocho Rios, Cayman)

Does anyone have a list of what we may need cash for?

Thanks!

You can get cash on your seapass in the casino. There is also and ATM on the ship, however I am sure there are fees attached.

Other than the casino and extra tipping, you cannot use cash onboard. You will need cash on shore if you take taxis, want to rent beach chairs, tips etc.

Definitly use your seapass and the casino to get cash. Just go to the window and tell them how much you want and they will bill it to your account. There are no fees at all on RCI(Carnival charges 3%). Just remember your credit card bill will be high because of this.

I have a friend that would go to the casino everyday and take out the maximum, something like $2,000 a day, and just bring the cash home. He gets his cc bill for some outrageous amount and uses the cash he brought home to pay it. By doing this, he earns frequent flyer points on his cc to pay for his airfare for his next cruise. Not a bad plan, but I really don't feel comfortable carrying around $10,000 in cash.

I have found that most of my cash goes for the airport - coming and going(taxi's, tips, snacks) and taxi's in port. That can really add up - which is fine - but I would rather not be short in the cash category because getting cash onboard or at the airport is expensive.

You also need cash to play bingo - and that can be expensive.

We found the only things we needed cash for were our port stops for taxis and such and we tip in cash.

We do this for a couple of reasons: 1) it lessons the credit card shock at the end of the cruise, and 2) on some ships, the tips that are automatically added to your bill go into a big pool which is then divided up among the service staff. By tipping in cash, we make sure the folks who treated us right get all the money we meant for them to get, and it also allows us to adjust our tips up or down for extraordinary (or not so good) service.

Just a word of warning for the friend who charges the maximum of $2k per day in the casino to earn frequent flyer miles on the credit card.

US requires specific reporting if you are carrying $10,000 or more in currency. Back in my banking days, we used to have a log tracking individuals who deposited or withdrew $10,000 or more that was submitted to the Office of the Comptroller of Currency (OCC), but I believe US customs also asks this on the re-entry form.

Happy cruising,

Wendy

I like to bring a lot of cash because I use it for tips, taxis, whatever I buy in port, casino, and excursions. I hate having a big credit card bill at the end so I really ONLY charge drinks and dry cleaning and MAYBE an excursion if it's over 100. to my sea pass card. Drinks alone drive the bill up pretty high - lol.

Yes, you can definitely use the casino to get cash on your Seapass account. The only trick to this is you have to do it during casino hours. So don't wait until port day and then think, oh, I need to get cash for on shore. Then it's too late. Casino's not open. You have to think ahead a little.
