I find roll calls to be good for research on ports. But not just the roll call for a cruise for which I'm booked but roll calls for other cruises for ports I am going to. In fact, often people come back after the cruise and answer questions. We almost never do group excursions either privately or through the cruise. Finding DIY information (train schedules, tickets, driving directions) isn't always that easy. The port of call boards are good. But roll calls can be too -- even for other cruises or lines. I mostly lurk to get ideas and info.

I don't participate in roll calls because DH and I like our privacy and don't want to be seen as anti-social or rude if we don't want to socialise with the other roll callers for the whole sailing. We tend to keep to ourselves onboard because it's one of the few times a year we get to be together mostly without the distractions of work.

This is us.

do you have a past bad experience with a roll call person hanging around you or calling you out because you didnt talk to them the rest of the cruise? ive only been to 2 roll calls but there was never any pressure to do what you dont want to. why would you be obligated to a bunch of strangers? very weird line of thinking. and if roll calls mean you are are supposed to hang around people the entire cruise then i guess they all hate me lol. but i dont care. i worry about me. not pleasing them.

that being said i met a few very nice people and even got invited back to one of their suites to look at it and other than incidentally running into someone i never really hung out with anyone and not one called me rude. how would that work anyway? someone at the end of the cruise goes up to you and says why didnt you hang with me? and i never though of anyone being rude because they didnt hang or talk to me after the meet and greet.

No, but on our first cruise (before CC) we made the mistake of engaging in polite conversation one evening with a couple who recognised us from the newlywed game. After that it seemed like every day we'd run into them before dinner and have to spend cocktail hour talking to them and dodging a table share. They were nice enough, but cruising is our alone time and we don't want to socialise to that extent. We're polite (DH is English so he's super polite) and we felt awkward about saying anything to them about wanting to be alone.

After that, we decided to lay low and keep to ourselves. So based on that experience, not really a "weird line of thinking" at all.

So you avoid speaking to anyone on a cruise because of that one bad experience? I'm pretty sure that after the first time I had to spend cocktail hour with them, I'd have an excuse ready in case I ran in to them again. "Oh no, I have a flat foot and have to go back to the room and change it!" :p

I can understand not wanting to say something but I have always found politely saying with a smile "we are enjoying our date time but thanks for stopping to say hi" usually works. I have never met anyone who was offended with this.

Clearly, you're not English... or married to one :')

Honestly, I get why M&G works for some. But It doesn't work for us and I'm not one bit sorry about that.

And there's no reason for you to be! Just because some of us like to meet new people and socialize on vacation doesn't mean everyone does.
