OlsSalt Posted June 9, 2017 Author #3 Share Posted June 9, 2017 Touting the twice shown daily movie "A Dentist in the Chair" as a comedy sounds like a crowd pleasing onboard kick too. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053759/

Cruiser Bruiser Posted June 9, 2017 #5 Share Posted June 9, 2017 Wow, the "good old days." And a true sign of the many cutbacks in cruising: no more "social directress."

sandbag7 Posted June 9, 2017 #7 Share Posted June 9, 2017 What I noticed was the Mravinsky recording of Tchaikovsky 6th Symphony bring featured - the Mravinsky recordings of the 4th through 6th Symphonies are still among the best to be heard - I'd sit in the Dentists chair for that! taxmantoo Posted June 9, 2017 #9 Share Posted June 9, 2017 Dance music until 2 am ??? What a wonderful concept!
PSR Posted June 10, 2017 #10 Share Posted June 10, 2017 Dance music until 2 am ??? What a wonderful concept! I noticed that, too! Now there are hardly any people out and about aboard a HAL ship even at the starting 12:15am time for the dancing...maybe if there were some varieties of music (not just BB King).... RuthC Posted June 10, 2017 #11 Share Posted June 10, 2017 Dance music until 2 am ??? What a wonderful concept! There was lots of dancing, in both the Ambassador Lounge and the Queens Lounge for pre-dinner cocktails; after dinner in the Ambassador Lounge until late, as recently as the early 90s. Even the Tropic Bar (the piano Bar on that ship) didn't open for business until 11:00 PM, and was still jumping at 2:00 AM. (I know because I closed the joint so often). :D There was a variety of different entertainment going on all over the ship, which is what kept people out having fun. I suspect that even the most lavish of staterooms had nothing on the current style cabins was also an incentive to get out and mingle. People tended to socialize more back then. OlsSalt Posted June 11, 2017 Author #15 Share Posted June 11, 2017 WIKI history of the "old" MS Rotterdam: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Rotterdam Originally 1400 passengers and was downsized to 1100 passengers - probably a conversion of bunk bed cabins? Who knew HAL ships at one time got smaller, rather than bigger.
