levi2 Posted July 9, 2017 #1 Share Posted July 9, 2017 Thinking of July 2018. Anyone have past experience with ship and tours?
jelayne Posted July 10, 2017 #2 Share Posted July 10, 2017 We did a14 night Russia and Baltic on the Eclipse in 2014. That was a great cruise! We didn't do any ships excursions. In St Petersberg we connected with another couple from our roll call and booked a private tour for the 4 of us. It was a great decision as it only cost a little more than booking a private tour that had groups up to 16. We had a guide & driver and were able to move as fast or slow as the 4 of us wanted to go. The company we used has since been purchased by SPB tours. In other ports we either booked private tours- joined others from the roll. call for a walkIng tour in Estonia. We also DIYd ports in Denmark, Sweden & Finland.
nekzaadvakil Posted July 10, 2017 #3 Share Posted July 10, 2017 We did the Scandinavian/ Baltic cruise on the Celebrity Silhouette in 2015 and it was one of our best cruises. The S class ships are absolutely stunning and the itinerary is AMAZING. So many amazing places to see in 1 cruise! I have a detailed review of all the things we did including where we took our tours. Unfortunately all pictures were hosted on photo-bucket which has now pulled down images unless you pay an exorbitant amount.
easyboy Posted July 10, 2017 #4 Share Posted July 10, 2017 Thinking of July 2018. Anyone have past experience with ship and tours? We did St. Petersburg with SPB Tours. We had DIY on some ports. We learned a lot about the ports and better way to appreciate the area at the Northern Europe & Baltic Sea Port of Call Forum.
Grandma Gilly Posted July 10, 2017 #5 Share Posted July 10, 2017 An amazing itinerary. However, if you are on a large ship you will dock some way out of St Petersburg but on a smaller ship you dock right in the city. We have done both, once on Celebrity and the other on Regent. However, you are not allowed off the ship unless you are on a ships tour or have a private guide, you can't just get off and wander around on your own. cruisin lady ca Posted July 10, 2017 #6 Share Posted July 10, 2017 (edited) There is a very active roll call for the July 1, 2018 Scandinavia & Russia cruise on Eclipse. There is a lot of tour planning going on and the information is being shared on the roll call. Feel free to read through the posts if you are considering that cruise. We booked this cruise while on board the Equinox in April. A number of folks we met raved about the Scandinavia & Russia cruises they had done. While I haven't sailed on Eclipse, I have been on Reflection and Equinox a number of times. They are all beautiful ships and we really enjoyed the entire experience on board. Planning small group excursions with other people on our roll calls has also worked out very well. The excursions have been excellent and the cost has been less than what we would have paid if we booked through Celebrity. On occasion, we have taken Celebrity excursions. Those were chosen for specific reasons, not the least of which was being absolutely certain we wouldn't encounter any issues getting back to the ship, as well as for safety reasons. Lady Chew Posted July 10, 2017 #7 Share Posted July 10, 2017 We took this cruise in 2015. It was wonderful! We did most of the ports on our own. Very easy. I did a little research beforehand and we put together our own tours, using HOHO buses in a few ports, free shuttle into city centers in one or two, sometimes just walking into the city from the ship ... had a private small group tour in St.Petersburg, and took the Celebrity excursion to Berlin (since it was so far away and we wanted to be sure we were covered in case of delay which was very fortunate, because we were delayed about an hour or so by awful traffic ... )
