JerryInIL Posted July 30, 2017 #1 Share Posted July 30, 2017 Castles Along the Rhine disembarks in Basel. Will we have time to catch a hopper back to AMS for a flight back to the U.S. (around noon), or will it be worth it/safer to spend the night in Basel and returning the following day? Thanks !!! JohnKen3 Posted July 30, 2017 #2 Share Posted July 30, 2017 Do-able but probably a bit tight for a noon flight. If you flight back to the US is from AMS, I suggest you spend the night in AMS. At least you do not have to worry about getting an early flight to AMS in the morning and worry about flight delays or cancellations. Also, there really isn't all that much in Basel. For an alternative, why not consider taking the ICE train from Basel to Amsterdam and take in different scenery. About 7 hours 15 min, change once at Frankfurt or Cologne

Floridiana Posted July 30, 2017 #4 Share Posted July 30, 2017 According to our son who took an ICE from Amsterdam to Stuttgart, you don't see much of the scenery because the tracks are often within berms.
JohnKen3 Posted July 30, 2017 #5 Share Posted July 30, 2017 I would not call it a scenic ride like you would get say in Alaska. But it is different mode of travel so a different experience.

We took an early morning EasyJet flight from Basel to Gatwick - no issues. We very often do this, from various destinations in Europe, to and from our river cruises. Daisi Posted July 30, 2017 #7 Share Posted July 30, 2017 Thanks JohnKen3, we are taking the "milk run" through several towns, so just thinking it's another way to see the country side. From what I can see, we travel along the river in parts, so hoping for a different view. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
JerryInIL Posted July 31, 2017 Author #8 Share Posted July 31, 2017 Looks like there are afternoon flights from BSL that connect in other cities, eg United BSL/MUC/ORD
FuelScience Posted July 31, 2017 #9 Share Posted July 31, 2017 When we ended our cruise in Basel, we went to Zurich to get nonstops to North America. Direct trains from Basel to the Zurich airport take about 1 1/2 hours.
AnhaltER1960 Posted August 4, 2017 #10 Share Posted August 4, 2017 JohnKen, that's what we are planning on doing, a "reverse cruise" along the river. Have you done this? Interested in knowing if you see much. As with a ship, the most spectacular part of the river is between Mainz/Bingen and Koblenz/Bonn. Just make sure that the train takes this route, as many of the fast ICE-trains take another route between Frankfurt and Cologne (which is fast, but not following the riverand indeed plenty of concrete walls or tunnels rather than scenery). If you search for trains on the Deutsche Bahn website www.bahn.de you have to chose the extended search and the add Koblenz as an interim stop; this will give you the trains along the river in the very scenic Middle Rhine valley(when on the train, sit on the right). The other parts from Basel to Mainz and later Cologne to Amsterdam are not all too spectacular, plenty of Industry and flatlands.
Daisi Posted August 4, 2017 #11 Share Posted August 4, 2017 That is the route we are taking. I know it will be a long day on the train, but hope to get nice scenery. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
JerryInIL Posted August 4, 2017 Author #12 Share Posted August 4, 2017 Apparently our cruise actually docks during the night, so disembarkation is early enough for 10:00 flights out of BSL.
