Hi,

My friend and I will spend some time (and hopefully make a little money) at the casino in the evenings. However, I am not looking forward to carrying cash or paying for the ATM fees. Will the cruise line cash a Cashier's check?

Thanks in advance.

from ncl faq page:

How do I pay for onboard expenses?

For your convenience, all shipboard expenses are charged to your Onboard account. Sign up when you check in, establishing your method of payment with Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, JCB Card, Diner's Club. You may also use your debit card however please be advised that we obtain pre-authorization, as we do for all Credit Cards, and some banks hold these funds for up to 30 days. Cash can also be used as a method of payment to settle your account with an initial deposit paid in advance.

Using your debit or ATM card

  • Norwegian does not recommend the use of a debit card as payment for your onboard folio.
  • Please be advised that multiple holds will be placed on your debit card account based on your onboard purchases.
  • After settling your onboard folio, these debit card holds may remain on your account up to 30 days after the cruise ends.
  • To avoid overdraft charges from your bank, please make sure that you have enough available funds in your account during this hold period.
  • Norwegian will not be responsible for overdraft charges resulting from holds placed on Debit Card accounts.

Traveler’s Check / Cash Procedures

A cash deposit may be placed on your onboard account in the following amounts:

7 day cruises - $300 USD per person

Less than 7 days - $150 USD per person

More than 7 days - $450 USD per person

Once you have exceeded the deposited amount, your account will be closed to further charges. You can deposit as much money as often as you'd like throughout the cruise, however, refunds cannot be made until the day of disembarkation for any excess.

**Personal checks will not be accepted, nor can they be cashed on board.

This is precisely what Traveler's Checks are for.

Travelers checks are old school! The bank, if they issue them anymore, is where you pay your fees!

Well, when the OP doesn't want to carry cash, and doesn't want to pay the ATM fees, and presumably does not want to pay the 3% fee to charge cash to their onboard account, tell me, what other option is there?

Exactly. Looking for a way to Not pay fees and Not carry a lot of cash. And the credit application has a minimum request of $5000. I like to gamble, but not that much.

If I find a bank that has Travelers checks, do you know if I will be charged to cash them on board? I know it's not a big deal, but I just hate paying to get my own money.

I guess I could always find an ATM on shore....

We prepurchased onboard credit last cruise, and will again this one - and then cashed it out at the casino. This was especially nice since we could pay in CAN funds then too.

Doesn't that incur a 3% fee?

What do you consider a lot that you don't want to have to carry? $1000 can be easily put in a wallet with just 10 $100 bills. Or is it just a security/safety issue?

It does, and I didn't see the pp talk about that either, sorry.

For us, it was well worth it to not have to deal with international currency issues.

Before sailing we estimate how much cash we should bring for the length of our cruises, which usually entail 14 days on the average. Meals and tips before/after the cruise, enough for plenty of those 1 and 2 dollar tips for service on the ship, depending on port or sea days enough for our visits to the casino and enough for moderate spending at ports of call where any major purchases will go on plastic. A visit to the bank a day or two before we leave and that's it.

We did the Travelers Checks thing a few times when we started cruising but after 17 years and some common security sense we do cash. It is fun to see at the end of each cruise whether we come back with any money or break even. Several time we have been very pleasantly surprised.. LOL

Options?

The person may consider:

a) Carrying cash is really not a big deal. When was the last time anyone here "lost" their cash? Couple thousand is really no big deal.

b) ATM fees - for a small fee, you can walk up to the ATM onboard and get $1,000. Easy stuff.

c) Pay the 3%.

Sometimes the options mean doing something that maybe you are not comfortable with.

  • 1 month later...
In that case will you please give me a couple of thousand?

I was going to do that, but figured you did not like to carry that much cash around - LOL!

And of course my "no big deal" was referring to carrying it around. It is of course a bid deal. I often giggle just a bit when folks do not want to carry cash when traveling as somehow they are more likely to be robbed because somehow the bad guys know they are carrying extra cash.
