moderate drinkers did cheers -was it worth it?

Breaking even on a $500-$1000 package is not what I'm looking for

So what are you looking for? Breaking even means that you spend no more for Cheers! than you would have for the individual drinks you consumed, thus making the program “worth it” in an economic sense.

The way I read the OP is that he broke even on Day 3 and any other days on that cruise were “profit days” on which he drank for free after already recouping his initial cost for the program.

absolutely yes

I have agonized and analyzed the cheers program for my last three cruises. This year we decided to use Allstate gift card to get a ten percent discount so the cheers program only cost us 720. We had broken even on the third day of our cruise. It was a lot of fun to try drinks we never had before higher end liquors and enjoyed many specialty coffees.

Having two specialty coffees two pops and many bottles of water along with champagne before dinner wine with dinner and an after dinner drink easily paid for the program. we usually went to the alchemy bar in the afternoon before dinner and the steakhouse bar in the evening for some high-end specially liquors .

We tipped the bartenders cash and made great friends and they made us great drinks

If you are on the glory. Tell yulia in the alchemy bar hello and ask for denis in the golden restaurant along with tuty at the coffee bar. Ananaya moved to the freedom. Tell them rileys family says hello

We loved Yulia!

OP

After agonizing and analyzing you got what most people miss.

1) Try new drinks

2) You don't need to drink 15 to break even

3) You didn't worry about it going to S &S card.

Nice to hear another person enjoyed it!

This. Especially #2. But I have to drink 15 drinks a day to get "what I paid for".

For those who would have spent more than the cost of Cheers, there really is no disputing its worth, and then some.

For us, we don't drink $840 worth of drinks in a week, nor would we want to. I've usually already had a few at port. Between a day in the sun, and all of that food, I rarely have the urge to drink a ton on the ship. I don't want one with breakfast or dinner either. That is time to hydrate for me. I'd prefer them by the pool on sea day, and a few at night. Pay as you go, goes a long way.

Looking forward to trying a beverage package we selected as a perk on a cruise with a different cruise line. Interested to see how much drinking outside the norm we do and then compare to whether or not purchasing a package on Carnival would be worth it.

CW and I get it every cruise. Bloody Mary every morning with breakfast, 2-3 beers in the afternoon by the pool, a few margaritas while getting ready for dinner, a cocktail while waiting for our YTD buzzer to light up, a few glasses of wine with dinner, then a nightcap of one or two bourbons. We don’t limit out most days, but we would definitely have paid more by the drink than what Cheers cost us. So for us it was a good deal, as it made no difference in how much we drank every day.

If 6 drinks is the breakeven point for Cheers!, we'll never reach that, nor would we want to. But, my wife loves the coffee drinks and each of us would have no problem with having a few drinks a day, if 3 - 4 drinks were the breakeven for a smaller package.

Plus it would allow us the opportunity to try something else we might not have opportunity to.

For the kind of imbibing we do, I can't justify $800 - $1000 more on a cruise just to drink more. Our bar bill is typically $200 for a 7 night cruise.

That would be great for us too. Hubby and I will probably only drink 3-4 alcoholic drinks a day, maximum. Even less on port days. We don't drink sodas or juices or specialty coffees, so none of that is relevant to us.

You can get your own Cheers! lite package by purchasing Cruise Bar Cash (or Cruise Cash if you want the flexibility of using it for more than drinks). If your bill is typically around $200, purchase $400 to allow for trying extra drinks. Or purchase $200 bar and $200 general (which might work at the casino to cash out even though technically non-refundable).

I think there is a limit of $500 per cabin/per type of Cruise cash, so still considerably less than Cheers. There also aren't the sharing limitations so it is good for those where only one in the party drinks or if you want to try some of the specialty items (fish bowls, samplers) that aren't covered by Cheers.

This is what we did on our last cruise - I purchased $200 and my sister $300 in Bar Cash. It worked out well for us as we had DOU in the casino and it was a 7 day cruise. I had never thought to use the Bar Cash - but depending on the circumstances, I will definitely use it again.

On this next cruise, my 31 yoa daughter will be with me in my cabin and my sisters 40 something daughter will be in her cabin. Since it's only a 4 day cruise, and our daughters will not have the DOU in the casino (plus they drink more than we do), we will be purchasing CHEERS package.

I don't worry so much about breaking even and have purchased CHEERS several times where I didn't come close to breaking even, but I still felt it was worth it. There are different factors to consider, but the Bar Cash was really good for us. On the last day, when we realized we weren't going to use all of it, we made an inquiry about whether you could use it as extra tips (we had been tipping extra in cash) and learned that you could use it for tips. Were able to give large tip on the last night to our favorite bar waitress in the casino. It was a win-win.

This. I only have a few drinks the entire cruise so Cheers wouldn't be the least bit worth it to me. But I know these packages are a great deal for other people. Glad it an option!

Glad to hear it worked for you:) Do you happen to know/remember if Cruise Cash Bar or Cruise Cash can be used on the private islands? I know Cheers cannot (due to the 15 limit and computer lag time with the ship) but I couldn't find on Carnival where it specified one way or the other.

Yes, they are linked to your Sail and Sign Account.

I was able to purchase Cheers for my cruise last week due to unique cabin arrangements. I really enjoyed it and did break even (barely). Never came close to the limit. My usual cruising arrangements make purchasing Cheers very impractical as DH doesn’t drink (maybe 1-2 per cruise) and doesn’t drink coffee or energy drinks, etc. No way I can make up for both of us! But I did enjoy the freedom last week.

I have an 8 year old. I know sharing isn't allowed but how big a deal is it to slip my kid a milkshake?

According to the rules, you can’t. If they catch you they could take away the program. Is it likely?...no. But they would be within their rights to do it. I personally wouldn’t care as long as you didn’t make it obvious.

While I typed this my husband said "ask if we can slip some rum in it " lol here's hoping the events of the day wear him out.

Hey I got an idea - you COULD just pay for the milkshake, it's only like 5 bucks. Then use the opportunity to teach the 8yo the value of doing the right thing.

I could to that parrot bob. I probably will. I'm asking because I'm not a drinker and I was thinking of sharing to make it worth my $ and TBH the 8 year old would be oblivious anyway. No need to be nasty I was just wondering how big a deal it is. Maybe you should have all the facts before you are snarky.

It was just a suggestion. You're going to do it anyway and we all know it.

(THAT was snarky, since you brought it up. Not the first suggestion.)

This made me literally lol. Well played. 😂

I just love when people ask how big a deal something is. They already know the answer, and they already know they're going to do it, but it's like they're looking to others to make them feel better about it.
