Harvey Remnants

It's making landfall as a cat 4 hurricane *right now*.

Everyone knows what it's doing *right now.* Anyone saying what it will do or have done to Galveston by Sunday (30 hours from now) is just hypothosizing. That's fine but at least call it what it is.

Here's where we (Liberty) are at 7:30AM Saturday morning. It's a calm beautiful day.

Here are the rain projections over the next few days from the Galveston.c0m website.

I'm not from Galveston but that looks like a large but manageable amount of rain. Maybe RCI was right about attempting to dock on Sunday. 24 more hours to prove them right or wrong.

There's a huge difference between "28 inches" and "4 inches x 7." I'm not familiar with Galveston and how its able to handle rain run off. Earlier in this thread there were projections of 50" of rain and 12' surges. Clearly that isn't happening.

Actually, there has been more talk about a late turnover on Sunday rather than one bright and early Sunday morning. So that means that there is about 39 more hours before they can be proven wrong.

If we're able to dock in Galveston that leaves a ton of better logistical options than figuring out how to get us there.

Even if ground support isn't able to allow us off we'll be able to overnight in our intended port until we disembark. With the ship where it's supposed to be everything else just becomes timing. That applies to getting those on off and those wanting to get on on.

We'll know whether RCI of CCL's approach was best soon.

Galveston never was predicted to get that much rain or surge. And it's not 4 inches over 7 day. Most comes in 3 or 4 days. No area can handle that much rain. Stop trying to downplay it when, like you said, you have no knowledge

Really? I live in Baton Rouge and went through the great flood of '16. The flood conditions are very similar to what's happening with Harvey. Stalled system dumping large amounts of rain over days. 80% of Baton Rouge *didn't* flood while 20% was destroyed.

How can the two us being from Louisiana possibly have enough knowledge to predict what's going to happen in Galveston? The difference between us is I'm not an alarmist. And I'm on a ship that's impacted and have to drive along the coast to get home.

First - sorry to all of you who's plans for this weak are now trashed.

The stories I'm interested in is the people out on the ships, either doing circles in the Gulf or stopping up in NOLA to grab fuel and beer. I read that the ones in NOLA have the option to get off and find a way home - I'm from Chicago area so I'm guessing with work, I wouldn't have a good excuse as to why I got back on to extend my vacation - but I sure would want to - couple extra days, and sea days at that - it's gotta be a good time for some of the people - sure the "theres no table cloths" people are gonna moan and carry on - how about the ones who like to roll with it and understand that some things just happen and make the best of it.

And those of you now finding something else to do this week - what are you gonna do to fill the now - unplanned - itinerary?

Storm surge numbers on Cruise Critic have ranged from 7' to the now 30' and that's at the very least amusing. Inland rainfall floods are a problem, and some low lying areas have high water now. Rain in remarkable amounts won't innundate Galveston, it's wind pushed water. I've seen Carla, Alecia, Ike and Allison and what got low lying areas was wind pushed water. Look at the damage so far, it's wind related. Homes five miles from mine were devastated by wave action during Ike and we had minor damage and no flooding. Micro burst wind took fences and trees and broke some windows.

Harborside Drive will flood after a 2" rainfall in a brief time and be down in an hour. The Seawall has never flooded since it was constructed. Homes and businesses along there and three streets back didn't have flooding damage after Ike.

Galveston Island is accessible, Broadway is open down to 21st and the terminals area roads are clear as of now. The next 24 hours will tell, I'd expect Houston area roads to be flooded if the rain bands intensify.

It is possible, I suppose. It certainly would be more convenient for all. You are supposed to dock tomorrow, Correct? I believe Galveston already had high tide.

I hope for your case it works out. Aren't they supposed to issue a notice by noon today? I will check to see if the port opened or has given any idea of opening.
