Mr DK Posted August 24, 2017 #51 Share Posted August 24, 2017 Unfortunately, those numbers are not accurate. There are many more that are currently listed as missing (disappeared as Mexico likes to call them). These individuals are unaccounted as their bodies are not yet found. Many will say that murders in Chicago are up therefore is just as bad as Mexico. The murders in Chicago are concentrated in certain areas where there are gang wars going on. Not spread across vast areas frequented by tourists. A few weeks ago there was a shooting in broad daylight (around 2 pm if not mistaken) right on the beach in Cabo. It should be noted that the "Cabo" incident you refer to actually occurred in San Jose Del Cabo, about 30 miles away from Cabo San Lucas, and not generally a destination for cruise passengers. I would not feel unsafe in any of the Mexican cruise ports. Sent from my iPad using Forums

huskerdan25 Posted August 24, 2017 #53 Share Posted August 24, 2017 I agree with those that feel safe at the ports of a Mexican Riviera cruise. Have taken this cruise several times and never felt unsafe at any of the ports. We love going to Mexico via cruise ship and would gladly go again with no fear for our lives. We're scheduled for a Princess cruise departing on Oct. 5 and the stop at Cabo includes a "Cabo San Lucas City Highlights" tour (Princess excursion). From the Princess website description: Continue your tour at the quaint, authentic Mexican town of San Jose del Cabo. Stroll along the charming streets independently and view the fascinating historical sights. We have signed up for this tour but I'm having second thoughts. We may end up staying close to port or just staying on the ship. Disappointed. Edited August 24, 2017 by debbie311
land lover Posted August 24, 2017 #55 Share Posted August 24, 2017 (edited) This may have been true in 2009. But in 2015 is was due to the violence. The article only mentions three cruise lines as of the date it was written. A few more cruise line stopped going to certain ports (Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta to name a few) shortly thereafter. https://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=6356 Additionally, a few already stopped going to Acapulco already this year. Still stick by my original statement........a MR cruise out of SP is 7 days and for years has gone to Cabo, PV and Mazatlan a few weeks skipping ports or removing a port for a season does not equate to a "screeching halt of Cruises"...just sayin... BTW I believe little I read on cruise critic...but I like to participate..... Edited August 24, 2017 by land lover

floridalover5623 Posted August 24, 2017 #57 Share Posted August 24, 2017 Mexico is no more dangerous than going to most large cities in the world,All the people cancelling will make Mexican cruises cheaper......... works for me:D Except that the people who are targeted are mostly the tourists who have money. Also, people who cancel cruises going to Mexico will only cause the ships not to stop there & drive the business to other itineraries. How that means cheaper cruises is questionable. suekel Posted August 24, 2017 #58 Share Posted August 24, 2017 I go to Mexico every year, this year I've gone twice. Been doing this since I was 12 and have never had an issue of any kind. Probably still safer than Chicago.
CRUZBUDS Posted August 24, 2017 #59 Share Posted August 24, 2017 Mexico is no more dangerous than going to most large cities in the world,All the people cancelling will make Mexican cruises cheaper......... works for me:D Unfortunately they may be cheaper for a short time, then almost disappear. San Diego's cruise industry is no where near recovering from the peak some years ago, before the crime problem in Mexico got out of control. In season HAL and Celebrity had regular Mexico cruises from S.D. -- Royal Caribbean had two ships doing Mexico year round from LA. HAL does a handful of west coast Mexico now -- Celebrity, and Royal Caribbean do none It is very sad, as others have said Mexico has so much to offer
partybarbie Posted August 24, 2017 #60 Share Posted August 24, 2017 IMHO, I feel safer in Mexico than I do in some of the Caribbean islands or Columbia. The warning won't change our cruise plans. We will do what we always do. We stay in the tourists areas (or go on an ship's tour or with a reputable private guide), take only small amounts of cash, don't wear flashy jewelry, etc. There's crime everywhere. No matter where one travels, one should always be aware of their surroundings.

Also the fees and taxes Mexico charges are extreme. As you know in the last 15 years markets all over the world are opening up, more money can be made away from the west coast for these cruise lines. Most crime does take place in Latin Countries but Honduras and Belize are right up there with Mexico.
land lover Posted August 24, 2017 #62 Share Posted August 24, 2017 (edited) I am not defending Mexico but since my first cruise was my honeymoon in '83 Caribbean I have been watching the industry especially from SP. As a Southern California I never had an interest in Mexico...just because I have been around the culture my whole life. However......my parents enjoyed taking their married children. minus spouses/children on weekend RCI shorties in the 90s which included an Ensenada stop and then with my family I started doing family MR, 7 days on Vision and finally Mariner before she pulled out...because of pricing and a quick easy getaway..Once we had the privilege of taking a "swine flu" cruise which was diverted to San Francisco....at that time all cruise lines changed itineraries to Pacific Coastal...and then shortly afterwards many lines stopped or limited their sailings from the west. RCI had stopped their 3/4 day a few years before because of fees from Mexico. Then in the fall of 2013(I think) Princess comes in with these shorties out of LA and we are hooked again and once again we are back to taking 7 day MR...because I love those tropical fish.... Anyway the moral of this dragged...out paragraph......is it's all about the bottom line...and wanting to draw new cruisers. Carnival has always been around out of Long Beach...I've yet to go with them but some day I will, evidently they can fill ships due to their pricing. My last MR was in October ...I had a mini suite and paid what I viewed as to much with AIBP perk.....the pricing never dropped....I couldn't figure out why...a huge amount of the ship was comp. gamblers from Vegas, casinos in SD etc. had all gained their cruises by playing at land casinos or either on line..I have another MR booked for November...again with AIBP, 3 other couples are going with us they booked later with another promo and then a price drop of 300 a couple and free grats looked better so they all changed I preferred to keep the AIPB. So pricing has dropped already on many of these cruises...and lots of perks abound...so I really don't see pricing drop lower than what these couples paid for their mini suites maybe inside but they would probably comp. those..it's better to do that then sell then for $349.+ tx to a "regular" who will not be spending anything on the ship and use FCC, military, elite benefits. Stay on the ship if you're concerned, the view of Cabo from a tendered ship is spectacular. Edited August 24, 2017 by land lover
Rare Shippy Posted August 24, 2017 #63 Share Posted August 24, 2017 And they are repositioning Royal from the east coast to LA. Wonder how that will play out if there are no Mexican Rivera cruises. Do not know where you heard that. We live on the West Coast & our first cruise was on Royal when they were stationed in L.A........decades ago. We still cruise Royal a lot & periodically I will ask an officer about them coming back to the West Coast & they always say...NO. It is a matter of $$ and they cannot fill ships there. I know that is true because there are ALWAYS good last minute deals here !

sassyredhat Posted August 24, 2017 #66 Share Posted August 24, 2017 Hey land lover, we were also booked on Mariner when RCI cancelled and pulled the ship. We were also on the swine flu cruise that diverted to SF. :D Yes, PCL is bringing the Royal west, and NCL is bringing the Bliss west for the MR itin's. I have been SO excited planning which ship to chose. ;p In the mean time, we have a 5 dayer, Cabo only, booked for March. We switched from CCL to PCL when they started doing these short getaways. I'm hoping this is just a bump in the road, because we love our MR cruises. Patti
