blue_water Posted September 6, 2017 #1 Share Posted September 6, 2017 Seeing more updates coming out of Tortola now and the damage being shown so far is devastating. For example, Paraquita Bay on the south coast of the island is normally a safe haven for boats during the strongest hurricanes and many were moved there in preparation for Irma. The scene there is horrendous - https://m.facebook.com/jim.scott.9235/posts/10154680066872714 We'll have more information on the impact to the island in the next few days... blue_water Posted September 7, 2017 Author #7 Share Posted September 7, 2017 (edited) So sad...What a terrible tragedy for everyone living there. Pictures of Roadtown, the Mooings, Dolphin Discovery and other areas show the devastation wreaked by Irma. Haven't seen Brewers or CGB details yet, and wonder if the new Wyndham Turtle Bay due to open next month survived. Still waiting for updates on missing people, that is the most important news. It will take time to re-build, they've done that many times before. It's the people that really matter and I hope that the forthcoming updates are good... lisaem79 Posted September 7, 2017 #8 Share Posted September 7, 2017 I'm so heartbroken at all the devastation but grateful not many lives lost. I hope the cruise lines still go into the ports this year so our tourist dollars can help them rebuild. They need us more now than ever. A post on FB last night said CGB was 80% lost. hawkman402 Posted September 7, 2017 #10 Share Posted September 7, 2017 The cruise lines should step up and donate large amounts of money to these islands for reconstruction.
Karysa Posted September 7, 2017 #11 Share Posted September 7, 2017 The cruise lines should step up and donate large amounts of money to these islands for reconstruction. That would certainly be a nice gesture and hopefully one cruise line will start and when people start changing their bookings to that cruise line the others will follow. The good will would be appreciated by the islanders and the cruisers past, present and future I would hope. All the best to the people of the BVI's as they get through the aftermath of Irma and start to rebuild.
CJDepew Posted September 7, 2017 #12 Share Posted September 7, 2017 Any news on Myett's in CGB? Our group visited at the beginning of March and they couldn't have been more accommodating or nicer.

blue_water Posted September 8, 2017 Author #14 Share Posted September 8, 2017 The cruise lines are not charity organisations..if you think you can help you donate some money to the british red cross going for tortola.. Sent from my iPhone using Forums Exactly. This is an emotional time for those of us who love these islands and are concerned about the people living there. We have friends living there that we visit, and our thoughts are with them, and with everyone living or staying there of course. Based on the little information we have from them and from the social media, it looks like this may be a major recovery effort followed by a major re-build effort, not only on Tortola, but on Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke. As backsbanny mentioned donations would certainly be appreciated by the charity orgs that will be providing the immediate aid to people in need. The financial impact cruise ships have on the people of the islands is highly debatable, and a topic for another time, this is a time for immediate help and support. And we want to try to keep images and discussions limited to the BVI. There are individual forums for the other islands that have been affected where you can follow the developments there. Let's all please keep the discussions on this forum specific to Tortola (and outlying islands like Marina Cay), Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost. Hope to see some positive news coming out of the islands of the BVI as we learn more...
makiramarlena Posted September 8, 2017 #15 Share Posted September 8, 2017 Any news on Myett's in CGB? Our group visited at the beginning of March and they couldn't have been more accommodating or nicer. Some posts on facebook are indicating that all the bars in CGB were destroyed. Myetts lost its roof. Reports are that the people are OK.

Did you see the before picture of those boats lined up? It really puts things into perspective when you see before and after pictures of places (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4861468/Stark-photos-Irma-s-destruction.html)
blue_water Posted September 8, 2017 Author #17 Share Posted September 8, 2017 Yes these are the charter boats and they were lined-up very nicely in Paraquita Bay prior to Irma. This is nicknamed "Hurricane Hole" because it has always been a safe haven for boats during hurricanes. The results this week show just how deadly Irma is...The before and after shots that are circulating are hard to fathom...
blue_water Posted September 8, 2017 Author #18 Share Posted September 8, 2017 More updates here with helicopter shots along Virgin Gorda which is just devastated, these shots are very hard to look at if you are familiar with the resorts shown so beware. Also shots of Anegada and Tortola with more to follow. https://www.facebook.com/caribbeanbuzzhelicopters/?hc_ref=ARQf_2ZZChWx1D8337PlHMh1Q_-YDidJuHZDv3c3FSN3ZZAqlD99_1H-zL4S4D016DE&fref=gs&hc_location=group
