Rare notamermaid Posted October 18, 2017 #2 Share Posted October 18, 2017 Here are some additional details: http://www.marinelog.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=27390:viking-orders-seven-more-river-cruise-ships-at-neptun-werft&Itemid=231 In the words of Viking's boss (shortened): "We knew there was an opportunity to do things differently when we started this company 20 years ago," said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking. "In the last two decades, we have spent more than $1 billion marketing the concept of river cruising to North Americans, and today we are a household name. ..." 1 billion dollars on marketing - that is impressive. You know: marketing leads to demand leads to supply leads to marketing, and so on. notamermaid
Rare pinotlover Posted October 18, 2017 #3 Share Posted October 18, 2017 At what point do they kill the goose? Pulling up to a church to see 12 other buses parked out front has lost its allure. Having your whisperer overriden by a different tour guide of perhaps a different company or/and language becomes aggravating. In some of those countries it’s getting where the best places to visit are those far away from where the river boats dock. Viking’s response is add more longboats! I know someone who loves Viking River who went on Viking Ocean...Homelands. Loved the smaller 930 passenger ship itself but situations like St Petersburg with 5+ 3,500 passenger ocean ships in town totally overwhelmed the shore excursion tour sites for him. NanciEA Posted October 18, 2017 #5 Share Posted October 18, 2017 New ships, but will they add a small exercise room, bicycles and bike tours? We switched to AMA and Avalon and won't return to Viking until they offer some "active" options on their river cruises.
Rare notamermaid Posted October 18, 2017 #6 Share Posted October 18, 2017 Interesting you should mention this... New ships, but will they add a small exercise room, bicycles and bike tours? We switched to AMA and Avalon and won't return to Viking until they offer some "active" options on their river cruises. Currently it appears just the opposite, Viking has expressly said that they will not add exercise rooms (for the time being?). They are not catering for "active passengers", for lack of a better expression on my behalf. notamermaid
Rare pinotlover Posted October 18, 2017 #7 Share Posted October 18, 2017 I don’t believe Viking’s targeted clientele is “active” passengers. But that’s OK! These lines are not one size fits all. We active passengers have other lines happy to meet our needs. I’m much happier with many of their physically limited on Viking and not elsewhere!
