Rjh8842 Posted November 12, 2017 #1 Share Posted November 12, 2017 My parents are going on the freedom in just a few weeks. My dad will be staying on board while in port. He is also in a wheelchair. Last cruise we found out the casinos are closed while in port. He is bringing a book. But I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions of things he can do. Jasukkie Posted November 12, 2017 #2 Share Posted November 12, 2017 Is he staying onboard by himself? We enjoy scrabble and card games, or reading. Is he in a power chair and able to get around easily, or more likely to stay put in the cabin?
Rjh8842 Posted November 12, 2017 Author #3 Share Posted November 12, 2017 He is in a power wheelchair. So he can get around easily. And yes he will be alone. My mom will be doing excursions lasting from 2-4 hrs.
39august Posted November 12, 2017 #4 Share Posted November 12, 2017 There will be trivia games during the day. We enjoy the Solarium on port days. Nice place to read with views.
Jasukkie Posted November 12, 2017 #5 Share Posted November 12, 2017 Gotcha, big help to have the power chair. I haven't been on Freedom, but I imagine most of the ship should be accessible. Would he go to trivia and things like that? Maybe there will be a movie in the theater during the day? I know things do tend to be limited on port days though. I face similar challenges when travelling with my parents. I know it's very important to them to not make others feel like they have to hold back from doing other things. dplusd Posted November 12, 2017 #6 Share Posted November 12, 2017 Be sure he checks out the Promenade deck 4. It's outside, covered, great views of the port, sea and he can watch people returning to the ship. It's one of my favorite places on Freedom class ships. payitforward Posted November 12, 2017 #7 Share Posted November 12, 2017 Does he WANT to stay on board? If not, I suggest you email ShorexAccess@rccl.com. They will send you a list of wheelchair accessible shore excursions. There are a lot more than those listed in the cruise planner. There are things like trivia, bingo, arts and crafts, movies, restaurants, people watching, reading, etc. This thread is not only a review, but it also has copies of the Cruise Compass: https://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2425744
Rare JamesEM Posted November 12, 2017 #8 Share Posted November 12, 2017 He could check out the art work on each deck.
CruiseGal999 Posted November 12, 2017 #9 Share Posted November 12, 2017 FYI ... in case you don't know this ... the stores are closed while in port, also. Just saying if he needs any sundries ...
Rolady68 Posted November 12, 2017 #10 Share Posted November 12, 2017 Yes while in Port basically everything is closed the casino and the stores some of the food places might be open and again I'm sure there's something that he may be able to do just to look around and Window Shop from the outside Sent from my SM-T377V using Forums mobile app
CCC3 Posted November 12, 2017 #11 Share Posted November 12, 2017 I’ve not traveled on Freedom, but have done several cruises on Liberty (sister ship) and Navigator. Does Freedom have a Flowrider? If so, it is a lot of fun to watch people try & surf. If there is a card room, there are often groups playing card-type some sort. He could spend time outside on the Solarium...it’s just covered up enough to be shady, but still outdoors. Also, there is often a band outside (within earshot of the Solarium). He could catch the tunes while relaxing in the Solarium. Is Bingo a port-day activity...I can’t remember, as we don’t do Bingo. cb at sea Posted November 12, 2017 #12 Share Posted November 12, 2017 There is plenty to do...only the casino and shops are closed. The WJ is open for lunch, as will be any other smaller eating venues. The DR is NOT open for lunch on port days. He will NOT be the only one staying on the ship! kathyemma Posted November 14, 2017 #14 Share Posted November 14, 2017 Have him go to guest services - there is a bulletin board there where people post get together and meetings - there might be a group playing poker and looking for someone to join the game. And I second people watching at the Flow Rider - MUCH entertainment. I am sailing with my mom next week and she too will be staying on the ship while we go ashore. I set her up with a kindle and a ton of books. Too bad we are on the same sailing - they could play cards and keep each other company.
