tartanexile81 Posted December 16, 2017 #4 Share Posted December 16, 2017 If we're going ashore at night I always put some on. In some ports youmight not sail till 10:00 / overnight
janny444 Posted December 16, 2017 #5 Share Posted December 16, 2017 Hi....if staying on ship or in port you shouldn't need it but if you are thinking of doing any excursions that involve inland water....we did a rain forest river cruise....I would go prepared
kruzseeka Posted December 16, 2017 #6 Share Posted December 16, 2017 Sometimes there are stagnant pools at the back of some beaches - I would be wary of settling down close to those as some mosquitoes (I think from memory the Zika carrying mosquito for one) can be active in the daytime. Mostly mosquitoes are active early morning and evening when you're likely to be on board but worth taking that into account - also as janny says water trips especially into mango swamp type areas could carry a higher risk. We tend to be ultra cautious (I don't tend to get bitten but DH does) and have used Deet in the past particularly, say, on an Everglades excursion. You can check the risks in each country you're visiting. I believe that there is an Avon product which is well recommended and more pleasant to use than Deet which is smelly! We once went for a quick swim on a quiet beach and just put our towels on the sand. DH was covered in sand fly bites in no time. Now we always get loungers and don't sit on the sand - just a thought if you're prone to being bitten.
kruzseeka Posted December 16, 2017 #7 Share Posted December 16, 2017 :o Oops! Not found many mangoes in mangrove swamps. Should have proof-read before posting!

Floflegs Posted December 16, 2017 #9 Share Posted December 16, 2017 We only used it in Amber Cove as told risk of malaria there. I had one small bite which never developed.
lyndzc Posted December 16, 2017 #10 Share Posted December 16, 2017 Just back today with a couple of bites, and we used repellant. I would recommend going prepared, it's not worth it! Sent from my SM-G920F using Forums mobile app
Nizzie Posted December 17, 2017 #11 Share Posted December 17, 2017 My friends say the best way to avoid getting mosquito-bitten is to invite me along on outings. I attract every bug in the area. Since I won’t be on your cruise I recommend repellent just in case. For myself, I carry a few of these - Bug X 12640 Insect Repellent Towelettes, 25-Count https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0051OJ9DO - highly portable, one towelette can be used by at least two people. Rare Keith1010 Posted December 17, 2017 #12 Share Posted December 17, 2017 It is wise to bring repellent to be on the safe side. Part of this comes down to where you will be going when you go off the ship in port and also even the individual as some people attract insect to them because of their scent. groovechick Posted December 17, 2017 #13 Share Posted December 17, 2017 My daughter is a walking bug buffet, even here in the UK, and she finds Incognito very effective. Smells pleasantly of citronella and doesn't contain lots of nasty chemicals, easy to apply spray which works under or over sun cream.

Avon shower gel was very effective as is Lavender oil. Does the incognito have a brand name and is it a spray or shower gel?.
mickey89 Posted December 17, 2017 #15 Share Posted December 17, 2017 Sand flies and sand flees are the more prevalent in the caribbean in the winter months so best advise is protect yourself especially your legs with insect repelllant having a minimum of 30% deet

Hi Grapau27, Incognito is the brand name and they do a whole range of products, here's the link to their shop https://www.lessmosquito.com/online-shop.html?protectsworldwide Products also available on Amazon (usually cheaper than retail and you can get bundles of 2/3 sprays, or spray and shower gel, etc.), Holland & Barrett, Waitrose, etc. Personally can only vouch for the spray (I use it as well as DD, although I don't get bitten as much as she does), but I believe the other products are equally effective. HomelessBear Posted December 19, 2017 #19 Share Posted December 19, 2017 Avon Skin So Soft Oil Body Spray is also supposed to be good. I’ve used it before with good effect and read that the cricket teams also use it. If it’s good enough for them then it’s good enough for me. groovechick Posted December 20, 2017 #20 Share Posted December 20, 2017 Daughter also tried the Avon Body Spray, but it didn't work for her. If she applies Incognito, she's fine. Hope you find it effective Graham.
