Beulah Posted December 19, 2005 #1 Share Posted December 19, 2005 With all the media attention lately about passengers disappearing off ships I have a question. Do all cruise ships have security officers on board along with security cameras? People don't just disappear without a little help . My husband and I will keep on cruising no matter what. Nitemare Posted December 19, 2005 #2 Share Posted December 19, 2005 yes, they all have security. The media loves to get it's fangs into any "scary" story. Yes there have been disappearances, yes there has been crime, and of course, there are all of the above (and much more) on land based vacations and also in your own neighborhoods
Mark Posted December 19, 2005 #3 Share Posted December 19, 2005 Yes all ships have a siginificant security force. Like all police departments, some of the force is seen and some is not seen. Their job is to protect the ship and passengers from each other and from outsiders. Yes there are video cameras almost everywhere. The only places I know that are not equipped with video cameras are your cabins and the bathrooms / locker rooms etc... Your photo will be taken and linked to your ID card and the security team will know everytime you leave or board the vessel. Although no security plan is perfect, I would not lose any sleep over the security on your cruise ship as long as you sail with one of the major cruise lines.:)
SailAways Posted December 19, 2005 #4 Share Posted December 19, 2005 Believe the posts above. You are much safer in the long run on the cruise ship than on land. The media does a great hype job - but in the past year, exactly how many cruise incidents have you heard of - perhaps three or four. That is incredible for the number of ships, plus passengers who cruise daily. Have a wonderful cruise - HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Jim B Posted December 19, 2005 #5 Share Posted December 19, 2005 On our cruises we have more than once decided to go to the fantail of the ship late at night after dinner, the show, and cocktail lounges just to have a little peace and quiet. We have always been impressed with how often security guards walk around late at night making sure everything is ok.
PhillyTom Posted December 19, 2005 #6 Share Posted December 19, 2005 We were on the Sapphire Princess on the 11/12/05 sailing. Mid-way thru the week, I saw a guy get arrested on ship (While docked) for public drunkeness. He was handcuffed and escorted off Ship. We then sailed five minute later. Don't know what happens to his belongings. Security if very visible.
SerenadingSarah Posted December 19, 2005 #7 Share Posted December 19, 2005 Not all ships have security cameras.
BruceMuzz Posted December 20, 2005 #8 Share Posted December 20, 2005 Last year far more people in America died from falling off riding lawn mowers than falling off cruise ships. You would be better off to worry about a security camera and security guards for your back yard.
Cotton Posted December 20, 2005 #9 Share Posted December 20, 2005 I'm female, over 60, and a solo cruiser. I never worry about my own security while on a cruise. I know these guys are there, but that in itself doesn't make me complacent. We're all responsible for our own safety to a degree. I'm not a paranoid type person, but I am always aware of my surroundings - both on the ship and in ports. Using common sense as you would anywhere is the key. I've never felt any fear issues when traveling.:)
tomc Posted December 20, 2005 #10 Share Posted December 20, 2005 Hate to say this, being a media person, but beware of the media. Not every family wants to admit that their loved one jumped overboard or decided to fall in with the wrong crowd onboard/onshore. The cruise lines can't say anything and the families can say anything; stories from other passengers end up on message boards, somewhat worse for the re-telling, and scare the dickens out of people. Given the many millions of people on cruise ships every year, I'd say the chances of something happening to you is approx equal to "Speed 2" being an accurate portrayal of a cruise ship hijacking.
