St Patty day

Considering that it's a religious holiday in Ireland and most pubs are closed it's not surprising there is no big whoop-de-do onboard. The US makes it into a huge party day but I don't know why...

I use it as an excuse to eat corned beef and drink Irish Whiskey but that is another American tradition. Corned beef wasn't traditional in Ireland. If one had a cow it was a treasure. Potatoes (introduced by the English) were the staple. When the Irish came to the US they were poor and unwanted by many. They ended up in cheap housing areas which had a large Jewish population. The cheapest meat was corned beef and the cheapest veggie was cabbage. Potatoes were added to the feast as a food from home. Corned beef, potatoes, and cabbage are a US tradition for St. Patrick's Day. They are not really an Irish tradition. (Yes, the Irish spell it "whiskey" like those in the US. The Scots spell it "whisky".)

And please note that the proper diminutive of St. Patrick is St. Paddy. I shudder to this how the Irish would react to hearing "St. Patty" (sic).

Heh... You certainly got that right! Patty is a diminutive for Patricia. Not something you want to call an Irishman.

When I was young I used to go to a local bar for Saint Patrick's Day (OK, more than one bar...). They served green beer in those 10 oz Pilsner type glasses for 25¢ a glass. We would usually order something like 10 beers apiece and they would just line them up on the bar. That would never happen now nor would I order them if it was still possible.

Chicago goes totally ape on that day. They dye the Chicago river green!
