pesos on mexican cruise

I must admit that some of these posts are giving me an education :). The fact that we have lived in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for the past 12 winters is not relevant as the expert posters in this thread have set me straight. I must be crazy to use Mexican Pesos (exclusively) while we are in Mexico. After all, after reading some of these posts, why on earth would anyone use a country's own currency :?

The reality is that much of what has been posted is total baloney! So let me make it simple. Yes, you can use US currency in most Mexican ports. But (the big but) you are going to generally lose money on every transaction because the norm is not to give you the best exchange rate. There are exceptions, but they are not as common as some would expect.

But, if you are not planning on spending much money ashore, the exchange rate issues are really not too important as you will not lose much by using dollars. I must admit that in 12 years living in PV I have never used a US Dollar...but then I must be an idiot.

For folks visiting other countries, it helps to know the exchange rate. Items priced in US currency may not be the best price. Copy and paste this link onto your computer and find the current exchange rate. Don't get ripped off.

Take a lot of 10's, 5's and 1's. While the U.S. dollar is accepted, the primary scam is "sorry, no change

'.

Why scam when the money in Mexico is Pesos. Yes the change will be Pesos of course. Nobody needs to accept US$, they do you a favour.

Generally everywhere in the Caribbean that accepts cruise ships will accept USD in port. You can get pesos if you wish, but it’s not necessary. I always bring a mix of bills so I can pay in exact change because while they will accept USD, they may want to give change in pesos.

Never have I had a shop in the Caribbean give change in anything but USD. If you go to the straw market that might not be true, but even on the beaches you get change in USD.
