klfrodo Posted February 17, 2018 #1 Share Posted February 17, 2018 I just can't decide if I want to do this. We're spending 4 days in Amsterdam pre-cruise. Part of me says Yes, go for it. Experience a train ride in Europe on a high speed train. Experience Germany again (I was there in the 80's) Show your wife Cologne or Koln the former capital of Germany when there were 2 Sample ein schnitzel mitt pomme fritts un ein bier bitte. Then the other part of me is saying No, Come on man. You're 60 years old, you can't run around like you used to. It would be a very busy day. 2 1/2 hrs there, walking around all day, 2 1/2 hrs back. Just makes for too long of a day. Who has feedback?
Ine Posted February 17, 2018 #2 Share Posted February 17, 2018 The DB Ice train isnot really a highspeed train between Amsterdam and Cologne. Just a train that stops less then other trains. There is a surcharge for travelling this train and best is to make reservations. Cologne is a nice old town, just as also Dusseldorf is. Schnitzels and beer are also servbed in restaurants in The Netherlands.

Cotswold Eagle Posted February 17, 2018 #4 Share Posted February 17, 2018 (edited) Bonn was the capital of the Federal Republic after WWII, not Cologne, although because of its size and proximity to the smaller capital city many of the federal institutions were in Cologne. Cologne looks like a nice old town, but of course is not - the historic centre had to be almost entirely rebuilt after the war because it was more or less destroyed by Allied bombing. Whether you regard the buildings as restorations or modern copies, it is nonetheless somewhat unique. Up to your opinion if that is a reason to go or to avoid [emoji846] The cathedral is remarkable. With four days in Amsterdam, I’d probably choose one of the other towns in the Netherlands to visit...but then, I’ve been to Cologne! Hambagahle Posted February 17, 2018 #5 Share Posted February 17, 2018 If you want to experience a real high speed train take the Thalys from Amsterdam to Paris. Then have real frites and go back to Amsterdam. Or just stop in Brussels... Sent from my iPad using Forums

Sent from my iPad using Forums Thalys is a better train option, but given the OP’s concern about a long day, I wouldn’t suggest going further than Brussels - in fact, Antwerp might be a better bet. Hambagahle Posted February 17, 2018 #7 Share Posted February 17, 2018 Probably. But Americans usually want "name" places. Brussels would do - Antwerpen maybe not unless he wants to buy diamonds! Sent from my iPad using Forums
BeckyR Posted February 18, 2018 #8 Share Posted February 18, 2018 We are flying into Dusseldorf and spending 3 days there before taking the train to Amsterdam for a couple more days pre-cruise. Hope we aren't exhausted before we board!!
