How do you get into Venice from the port? We are on NCL

We walk to the People Mover, just outside of the port. Very short ride to Piazzale Roma.

Venice is definitely a place where you want to do a little pre-planning. So your question is a good one. You want to have a bit of a plan, how to get to the people mover, what vaporetto to take (or walk as we did). You can't get too lost in Venice since it is an island, but it can be a little overwhelming when you get off the ship - it is different than almost any other city, and a whole different way of getting around !

How close land taxi from Mestre station can come to NCL check-in point (compared to people mover)?

(BTW, can those taxi fit 4 people with one piece of luggage each?)

I’d recommend buying a Pop Up map of Venice from Amazon. They only cost a few pounds/dollars from Amazon and they’re brilliant.

But would a pop up map be able to answer questions asked:

 

"how close land-taxi is allowed to come to NCL check-in (relative to People Mover)"

 

or

 

"would land taxi from mestre (not airport) be big enough to hold 4 adults plus 4 bags?"

 

Google mape can quickly measure distance if one knows where exactly is NCL check-in facility.

No it can’t. I was really just making a suggestion to help make Venice a better experience. As far as taxis are concerned it depends if the taxis at the airport include estate cars/minibuses etc. An ordinary car would be unlikely to be big enough to carry 4 people and their cruise luggage.

do I assume you are getting off a train in Mestre or staying in hotel there pre cruise?

 

a taxi off the rank may be too small for all your luggage but the driver at rank should be able to call his company to send a larger vehicle

 

yes the land taxi can drop you right beside the NCL terminal and avoid walk from people mover

 

the problem with Venice port is that there are around 10 berths and depending on where your ship is can be a long circuitous route to get there

The floating bridge is put across the Guidecca Canal for one day a year. This year it’s Sunday 15 July. It’s called the Redentore festival & the bridge goes across to the Redentore Church. We’ve never been to Venice. Will be here with Norwegian over night. What exactly is the people mover? And you can walk into town from the port?

Was wondering if we should buy a 36 hour pass to take the water taxis back and forth?

The Vaporetto (water buses) are easy to use and the Pass makes it very easy. You do have to remember to validate your pass at a machine each time before you get on the boat. Make sure you have a map showing the various vaporretto routes and numbers (Pop up map of Venice is very useful -includes a map of vaporretto routes).

Walking is good too, especially if you get well away from the tourist areas, where it’s very quaint and much quieter.

The people mover is a short tram to take you from the port to Piazza Roma. Piazza Roma is the only part of Venice accessible by cars, busses ard taxis. From there you can get to any part of town by water bus or walking.

It ( the PM) avoids the busy walk along the highway but is likely to have a line.

 

The pass isn’t for water taxis. There are no public water busses to the port. The private Alilaguna water busses do have a stop there.

You really really need to consult Rick Steves or Toms port guide or Venice for Visitors before you get there. Also use google earth to see in advance what we are talking about. Otherwise it’s too confusing. Better still, read A few of Donna Leon’s novellas to get the flavour of the city

Note that water taxis are private and expensive. They are just like land taxis, but are in the water.

Vaporetto are public transport boats like buses but on the water. If you get the People Mover to Piazza Roma there is a vaporretto stop there.
