Drebbie Posted March 9, 2018 #1 Share Posted March 9, 2018 We are first timers to NYC and are planning on a few days of exploring prior to our cruise in October. On embarkation, we will leave from Manhattan Terminal. Suggestions for best location to stay to be able to venture to the "must see" sites? Any other tip and advice would also be welcome. Thanks. What exact dates do you need a hotel? Number of people. Realistic budget? If flying, what airport are you coming into? Generally you want to be looking in midtown Manhattan west and be prepared to take the subway to the downtown sites.
George C Posted March 11, 2018 #3 Share Posted March 11, 2018 Agree we always stay midtown within mile of Times Square, broadway shows , Rockefeller Center etc , also think 9/11 memorial and museum is a must see.
Rare Got2Cruise Posted March 12, 2018 #4 Share Posted March 12, 2018 October is one of the most expensive months. I would search all areas. Financial District you can walk to World Trade Center and Battery Park for Statue of Liberty. Then take subway for midtown. You want an acceptable property close to a subway that’s the most important thing. Also Eastside Midtown is good too as long as close to the subway. Exact dates and arrival airport are required for us to give specific suggestions and strategies.

138east Posted March 12, 2018 #9 Share Posted March 12, 2018 If you find something else more to your liking, feel free to post back for opinions. Marriott is a reliable brand. These "new" hotels I found are priced well to attract patrons. The Fairfield Inn is right near the 911 Memorial and has good access to the Statue of Liberty ferry. Times Square is a quick subway ride away for evening adventures.
Drebbie Posted March 12, 2018 Author #10 Share Posted March 12, 2018 Carol- since you have been so helpful- what if we were to fly into LaGuardia? We literally know zero about NYC.
138east Posted March 12, 2018 #11 Share Posted March 12, 2018 Carol- since you have been so helpful- what if we were to fly into LaGuardia? We literally know zero about NYC. You need to price it all out. 1). Pick a hotel area first - midtown or downtown. 2) You can fly into JFK, La Guardia, or Newark. Price all three. Decide what kind of airport transportation you're willing to take - airport bus, taxi, train, or car service. Note.: Airport bus will stop at Port Authority Bus Terminal, which is 2-3 blocks from Towne Place Suites. $15-18/pp each way. Cab from JFK to Manhattan is a fixed price plus tolls and tip - about $75. Airtrain + train to New York Penn Station is available from Newark and JFK ($13-15/pp each way). Car Service from LGA to midtown runs about $45 - more to downtown. Post back with what you're thinking and folks will give you more details and advice. George C Posted March 13, 2018 #12 Share Posted March 13, 2018 I would also get the Uber app, we really like it for getting around the city. Normally much cheaper than taxi and cars are more comfortable
bromleypod Posted March 20, 2018 #13 Share Posted March 20, 2018 We just booked the Hilton Inn Garden, Financial District for July and the rate was very reasonable compared to midtown hotels. Subway right across from hotel so easy to get anywhere from there. Taxi to MCT from hotel on embarkation day should be straightforward , I hope. trish1c Posted March 20, 2018 #14 Share Posted March 20, 2018 You only have a few days. Stay in Manhattan, not Jersey or Queens. The NYC subways are great. It's a walkable City & you can always hail a cab or grab & Uber / Lyft. What you lose in time & aggravation commuting from an outer borough or different state is not worth a small savings on the price of the hotel.
