We will be on the Vision of the Seas in September. We are looking into doing an excursion through Royal when we are in Villefranche. It is "Nice and Monaco on your Own".

Has anyone had any experience with this excursion? Or any other suggestions for this port?

I was on a RC cruise in 2014 and docked in Cannes. We booked the St. Paul de Vence tour in the afternoon and loved it. One of our best days, what an incredible little town to visit! That said, we got off the ship in morning and visited le Le Suquet area (old Cannes) and it was so charming. We ate at a little patisserie (bakery) that had the most superb croissants and other pastries right across from the market (perhaps Marche Forville?). We also walked a little in Cannes and went into shops. We thought we really could have stayed there all day and have been very happy. If you are considering visiting Nice, I would save that for another trip, as Cannes is really a great place to visit in its own right.

We had an afternoon tour (from Royal) that went to Nice and Eze. That left us the morning to explore Villefranche. I found Eze to be somewhat similar to St. Paul. Between the morning and afternoon we had a great day.

My recommendation for Villlefranche would be the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild. Take a short walk from the tender station to the (very pleasant) beach, then continue onwards from the beach for about fifteen minutes. The house was once owned by the Baroness Ephrussi who married into the Rothschild banking family (nice gig if you can get it!). It must be the quintessential grand Mediterranean villa with beautiful archictecture, fabulous furnishings, fine views over the bay and a magnificent garden. A little like the superb Vizcaya villa in Miami, only not so damp! Ooh, I forgot the musical water fountains. Here's one of my pictures from when I visited on Liberty OTS in 2013.

We visited Nice and Monaco from Villefranche on our own, though not with the ship’s tour ‘on your own’, if you see what I mean. First we caught the very frequent bus along to Monaco, then we caught the same bus back in the other direction and went right through to Nice. Then we caught it back to Villefranche. It was very easy. The tourist info people in the cruise terminal showed us where the bus stop is on a map. Alternatively you can do it by train.

Yes. We did it. I’m one who’d rather pay extra for less stress. For us it’s always worth the extra$$ over train travel. Even though it’s on your own there is a guide who fills you in with background info on the bus. The first stop was the Old Town in Nice. We purposely planned to go to the beach and the Flower Market so we planned accordingly by wearing our swimsuits under our clothes and bringing a towel from ship to sit on. We were only there for a dip so we did free beach. The beach and walkway along the sea is adjacent to Old Town. The visit to Nice was around 2 hours.

Then onto Monaco. The bus parks in the garage next to the Aquarium. We had plenty of time visiting everything on the Monaco side (not the Aquarium) plus had lunch at a cute sidewalk cafe. Monaco was spotless and pristine. Others on the tour walked over to the Monte Carlo side to look at the casino and have a fancier lunch. I believe the walk was 30 minutes.
