Purchasing insurance after reservation made??

Yes. I always buy insurance separately from what our TA offers through the cruiselines. I think most companies let you buy it up to a week after you make your initial cruise booking. I bought our most recent policy through this website. According to the FAQ page on Insure My Trip, you can even buy insurance up to the day before you leave--but there are more limits then to what the insurance will cover than if you purchase it initially.

You can purchase insurance clear up until the day before your cruise (or any other vacation). It's not necessarily wise to wait so long, as you miss out on the part of the insurance that covers you if you need to CANCEL the cruise for some reason. But, buying it the day before you leave still covers you for unforseen circumstances like a strike at the disembarkation port, as some cruisers finishing their trip in Barcellonia recently learned. It also covers you for lost luggage and unforseen medical emergencies that could occur while on vacation.

As with any insurance, it protects you against the unforseen.

Another thing to look for is coverage for pre-existing conditions, both yours and family members. Most policies require you to purchase the insurance within a few days of booking the cruise in order for pre-existing conditions to be covered.

You can purchase insurance right up to your final payment, but if you wait that long, and you or anyone in your travel party has pre-exisiting conditions, they won't be covered. Even if an immediate family member, who's not cruising with you, has a medical emergency, and you have to cancel your trip because of this, and that emergency is caused by a pre-existing condition, you won't get your money back. There is one insurance that will cover pre-existing if you purchase it at the last minute, but it's much more expensive than if you had purchased it at the time you first booked the cruise.

family of 4 on a 7 day trip. We are cruising in Oct and want to make sure this time. We got cancelled b/c of Katrina this past Oct. but since we were driving we didn't have to worry about purchased flights, etc.

Thanks for the thoughts!!!:)

May vary by travel insurance company but pricing is usually based on the ages of the travellers and the price of the accommodations. We have used TravelGuard (1x) and AccessAmerica (2x) and the polices were about $120 for 2 people (early 30s) on 7 night and 8 night cruises. Our policy included our cruise and our airline costs too though. You can go to both companies websites (just do www and .com for each) and plug in your info and it will pop up a quote and tell you what it includes.
