Clarea Posted April 6, 2018 #2 Share Posted April 6, 2018 How fast is the Voom service. Just fast enough for emails or enough for videos?. VOOM Surf & Stream is supposed to work with streaming standard definition video, but quality depends on load.
Big_G Posted April 6, 2018 #3 Share Posted April 6, 2018 Depends on the ship. Oasis Class we could stream almost anything. On Freedom last year we experienced freeze-ups while Facetiming
Biker19 Posted April 6, 2018 #4 Share Posted April 6, 2018 Up to .5Mbps down with Surf (only available to purchase on board) and up to about 4 Mbps down on Stream. You'd need Stream for videos.
toyman55 Posted April 6, 2018 Author #5 Share Posted April 6, 2018 We are signed up for Surf and Stream. One of our complement is a super senior who will probably spend most of the time on the patio reading her ipad except for dinners.

FYI - the WiFi signal is not so good on some balconies.
Clarea Posted April 6, 2018 #7 Share Posted April 6, 2018 (edited) FYI - the WiFi signal is not so good on some balconies. Plus, if there is a Royal ship parked next to you, be prepared to get connected to their WiFi. You will know this if you keep getting an error when you enter your access code or login credentials. toyman55 Posted April 6, 2018 Author #8 Share Posted April 6, 2018 Thanks for the heads up. Since we are at the back of the ship, we are probably hosed. I'll have to roll the old lady to a lounge someplace. : p
Biker19 Posted April 6, 2018 #9 Share Posted April 6, 2018 Thanks for the heads up. Since we are at the back of the ship, we are probably hosed. Simply moving a few feet closer toward the hallway (where the WiFi routers are typically installed) can fix the issue.

I'm at the very end of a hall, but I'll bring a wifi amplifier and extender just in case it may help.

SRF Posted April 7, 2018 #14 Share Posted April 7, 2018 Speeds can vary depending on satellite position. Last August on Grandeur, we were getting 5 MBPS down speeds. But pings were over 1/4 second. So streaming was OK, some some websites were very slow to load due to the number of calls they made to get pieces. Amazon was one. We also lost wifi for several hours due to sat position. 888sydney Posted April 7, 2018 #15 Share Posted April 7, 2018 Before someone posted a map where a ship can get real voom depending on the ship position. Anyone has the link? Sent from my iPhone using Forums
Clarea Posted April 7, 2018 #16 Share Posted April 7, 2018 Before someone posted a map where a ship can get real voom depending on the ship position. Anyone has the link? This map only applies to O3b service:
Biker19 Posted April 7, 2018 #17 Share Posted April 7, 2018 But pings were over 1/4 second. On non O3B ships, the best one can hope for is about 600 ms pings, regardless of ship position.
