Royal IQ or walkie talkies on Harmony?

Recommended Posts

okay thanks for the info. Kind of sucks there's no better app for Allure with texting features.

The RCI app (available for Allure) is eventually supposed to have a texting feature - not sure if it will happen by July.

Strange as it may seem, internet access and WiFi are two different things. WiFi connects you to a network, which may or may not have internet access. Royal does not charge to connect to the WiFi, and they even give you very limited internet access (RC websites) without purchasing VOOM.

Same as on many airlines.

You can connect to wifi, and only connect to the airlines sites.

And, on airlines, you can sometimes do movies and music. In fact, on some smaller aircraft and some airlines overall, they are going to this for all entertainment.

And Delta now offers free messaging, using a messaging app. I have used iMessage, Hangouts (Google), imo, and WhatsApp to communicate onboard. Even on long international routes.

One thing about walkie talkies, they may not be legal once you get into the territorial waters of other countries.

They may restrict private use of radios or the frequencies used for such devices in the US may be used by other users (military, police, etc) in other countries.

So for our Symphony cruise in May 2019, there's a good chance we will be able to text onboard via the RCI app? Or if not, since all of us have iPhones we should be able to iMessage (unless they fix the glitch)?

The glitch that allows free iMessages has only been reported on ships that support the Royal IQ app. This is a different app than the RCI App. I would not expect this on Symphony.

I would hope that by that time the RCI app will have a texting option.

I believe the glitch that allows free iMessage texting is a by product of the Royal IQ app and since Symphony doesn’t have Royal IQ that glitch doesn’t exist either.
