svcalum07 Posted June 19, 2018 #1 Share Posted June 19, 2018 Hello all! We are currently on Golden Princess in Juneau today! As for the negative reports in the last few months...there is definite water coming from the ceilings in various spots and the sewage odor on deck 7 prominade but only near the forward of the ship. We had upgraded to obstructed window rooms and we basically have a full view in 2 of the 3 rooms. Buffet breakfast has been great. Dinner is a little slow off and on but I was nice to relax. If anyone has questions let me know! The coast guard is doing a full inspection today! Having a great time so far! Minimal rocking of the ship for those worried about motion sickness! moki'smommy Posted June 19, 2018 #2 Share Posted June 19, 2018 We are on the Golden this fall. I'd love to hear all the best places to view the scenery and wildlife from the ship, what excursions you do and your impression of them, and any "secrets" of the Golden. We've not been on this ship before, but have cruised other Princess ships. Have a great cruise!
fishywood Posted June 19, 2018 #3 Share Posted June 19, 2018 I was on Golden southbound May 26 cruise (second half of DH with Island northbound) and am belatedly putting together my own trip report. So let me ask a ridiculously trivial question: Is there Kleenex in your bathroom? In my cabin bathroom the tissue holder had been removed and the space covered up by a multi-lingual sign specifically reminding ladies to use the provided disposal bags. When I asked the steward he said they were no longer supplied in cabin but would try to find a box for me if I wanted (presumably he would take a box out of the public restrooms?). I told him don't bother (and he didn't). Other than that (and some other confusion about dining times) it was a great cruise. Bar staff was more attentive than usual. The new menu at Sabatini's is phenomenal--go very, very hungry if you do. On board Naturalist Sue Hazlett was refreshingly glib, not the usual speaker in love with the sound of their voice. And comedian Gary DeLena was the funniest I have seen at sea in a long time. Hope he's still on board--but thankfully for you Cruise Director Marcus is not; he and a couple members of his staff set new standards for obnoxious. Just a few hopefully helpful hints...thanks for posting and enjoy the rest of your week!

svcalum07 Posted June 20, 2018 Author #10 Share Posted June 20, 2018 We have a box of Kleenex in the room and I moved it into the bathroom. Sewage smell is mostly in the hallways. I was worried about our rooms being above and down from the casino but not smoke smell or noise. Weather has been amazing! If anyone can tell me how to upload pics I will do that! We had 79 degrees and sun in Ketchikan and probably 75 today in Juneau with sun. Formal night was Sunday and will be Thursday. I did the lumberjack show in Ketchikan and my family did a sea plane. Both got good reviews although my brother said for the price of $250 each for the plane it was $$$$$. Today was whale watching with Mendenhall Glacier. It was well worth the money. We saw 4 whales and a bunch of sea lions and bald eagles. We did a private tour (not sure if I can say the name) and it was the 5 of us in my family and one other couple. It was worth the $$$$ to get a private one as we saw other bigger ships with easily 100 ppl on them. Tomorrow at Skagway we are renting two keeps to drive the Klondike and doing the sled dog with chicken bbq lunch (independent from the ship excursions.) We have loved trivia and saw the broadway show. Played bingo once and didn’t win. Bar drinks have been good. Our only sorta negative is the activities start much earlier than on DCL in the evenings. We wanted to go to a game show last night Majoriy Rules and we were at dinner for almost 2 hours so we missed it as I said the service seems to be a little slower at night. We have been eating in the Donatello room bc at 7:30 we can get in for anytime and have not had ANY issue. The speciality restaurants are both booked the entire cruise. We forgot to book when we boarded and didn’t want to pay upfront so that’s a bummer too. They said we could try and walk in but the chances are slim so book early if you want one of those!! Tonight is 70s night apparently with trivia and some atrium show. The comedian is a man from The Beach Boys. They also have a Yes or No game show. We have had early mornings and semi late nights. I don’t even think we will make it to the dining room tonight bc we ate lunch off the ship late at 3pm. We went to the Hanger and it was very good!! svcalum07 Posted June 20, 2018 Author #11 Share Posted June 20, 2018 Yesterday leaving Ketchikan we viewed from deck 16 and also promenade 7 when it got colder bc we could go inside and outside. We saw lots of whales last night going into a small strait up to Juneau.
JF - retired RRT Posted June 20, 2018 #12 Share Posted June 20, 2018 We did a private tour (not sure if I can say the name) You can't name travel agents, but you can name tour operators (it's done all the time).
moki'smommy Posted June 20, 2018 #13 Share Posted June 20, 2018 I LOVE Gary DeLena! hope he is still appearing when we are on. We saw him many times years ago before he was let go from another cruise line.

We saw him many times years ago before he was let go from another cruise line. OP has replied that Steve Moris is apparently on board: The comedian is a man from The Beach Boys. Hopefully Gary' date=' or someone ([i']anyone![/i]) else who is actually entertaining is also there as well. But there surely is a lot of ship hopping by guest entertainers in Alaska. Lewaina Posted June 20, 2018 #15 Share Posted June 20, 2018 Did Alaska on the golden last June Fantastic trip. The reason tissues have been taken out of the bathrooms is because unlike the toilet paper the Kleenex block up the toilets. fishywood Posted June 20, 2018 #17 Share Posted June 20, 2018 Am i understanding correctly that there is a new cruise director? I’ve seen a number of negative comments about one recently... According to this post on the Current CDs thread: John Loney started on the 6/9 Golden Princess cruises. He’s excellent and I think my mother is in love. I don't know about John but anyone has to be an upgrade over Marcus Prince J. He, and several members of his staff, clearly would be a better fit for Carnival. Or any line that runs short booze cruises where the audience would appreciate the smarminess that they tried to pass for silliness.

caribill Posted June 20, 2018 #19 Share Posted June 20, 2018 In my cabin bathroom the tissue holder had been removed and the space covered up by a multi-lingual sign specifically reminding ladies to use the provided disposal bags. We were on The Golden 3 weeks ago in a balcony cabin. A box of Kleenex was always provided on one of the tables next to the bed. We never had to ask for it. Princess has moved the box of facial tissues from the bathroom to the main room to help stop passengers from throwing used tissues into the toilet. This can (and does) cause plumbing problems as decent quality facial tissues do not dissolve enough in the water and can clog pipes.
waltd Posted June 20, 2018 #20 Share Posted June 20, 2018 I have yet to see decent facial tissue supplied by the cruise line. Certainly not Kleenex. What I've seen is generic facial tissue that looks and feels exactly like the TP they provide but in facial tissue size. Maybe it was just easier to use more of the facial tissue at one time if it indeed is clogging up the toilet.
biochemgrl02 Posted June 20, 2018 #21 Share Posted June 20, 2018 Sounds amazing with the weather. We had no rain last week and saw a pod of orcas in Juneau. The same comedian was on last week. We ate at Bernini’s anytime dining. And the specialty restaurants were all booked too but they had pub lunch the last day at Crown Grill for lunch. Taer al Saefer Posted June 20, 2018 #22 Share Posted June 20, 2018 John Loney was amazing! He will definitely show you guys a good time. We also loved Master and Commander, Lorenzo, and Slava for musical performances. If you have Anytime Dining, find Marcin and Roderick in Donatello and tell him that the 3 ladies from Seattle sent you!
