Visa for Canada

We are sailing the Summit to New England/Quebec in September form New York. We are EU (Irish) citizens. Obviously we need USA tourist visa. Can anyone let me know the visa requirements for Canada. Is it a normal tourist visa or is there an alternative as we are cruise visitors. Also are visas checked at every Canadian port and if so is this time consuming.

*Usually* when visiting ports during a cruise, passengers are not technically considered to be "entering" the country from a legal standpoint, so visas *usually* are not needed. "Not legally entering" the country is why you typically need only your ship card to disembark and reboard during cruise stops, not your passport. All that said, there are always exceptions, so I would contact the Canadian embassy or a Canadian consulate office in Ireland, and ask to be sure. (Unless another Irish citizen has done this itinerary recently and can confirm from personal experience.). You can try contacting the cruise line as well, but at best they typically spew some verbiage about it being the passenger's ultimate responsibility to determine what they need. At worst, they often give information that is flat out wrong because the phone reps themselves don't know and thus dispense incorrect information.

Do not take any information here as correct, it it is my understanding that you do not need a tourist visa for the US or Canada but you will likely need an ESTA ($14US) for the US and an eTA ($7CDN) for Canada. Ensure that you use the OFFICIAL websites to obtain them.

While some CC posters can say that X's Reps provide incorrect information, that is not a reason to not review X's website where there is information, maybe not definitive, about visas and passports and other possible documents for visiting or transiting countries while sailing. Do not expect X's reps to be experts in all things cruising outside of X's control.

 

Your best source of information, as already pointed out, is to contact the Consulate or Embassy in Ireland OR official websites for definitive info on the countries you expect to visit/transit. Please note that X, as posted here on CC, does provide Visas for some Asian countries at a discount or at no charge.

If you are travelling from Europe and are an EU citizen, you don’t need travel visa for USA or Canada.

 

You need an Esta for USA that lasts for 2 yrs and an eTa for Canada which is valid for fives.

The Canada eTA is required when you arrive to Canada by air, arriving by land or sea is not needed. check the following link

When all else fails to ditectly to the Canadian government site. In short the answer is NO. You do not need an ETA when arriving by ship.
