Need suggestions for Vancouver next May

Recommended Posts

Any suggestions on where to stay before a cruise in May 2019? We plan to arrive 2 days before the RCL cruise. Is it better to stay within walking distance of Canada Place? Any suggestions for a mid-range hotel at a convenient location? How can we get from the airport to the hotel?

What do you consider mid range?

We always stay at the Marriott Pinnacle. It is within walking distance to Canada Place, though we prefer to take a cab with our luggage. Fare is $6 or close to that.

Make a refundable reservation early where ever you decide as things book up quickly during Alaska season.

We enjoyed our stay at Blue Horizon Hotel on Robson Street. It was mid-priced, walking distance to restaurants and stores, and a short cab ride to the cruise port.

Another vote for the Blue Horizon. Have stayed there twice. In a very nice area with excellent shopping, restaurants and nightlife within close walking distance.

OP, you can really help yourself by firing up a Google map (or whatever online service you prefer) and looking at how small downtown Vancouver is. Literally any hotel you choose downtown is potentially walking distance to the pier - and everything else downtown, including the bulk of our local tourist sites. If you can manage even a 10 minute walk with your luggage, you have many options; 20 minutes (or a barely-scraping-into-double-digits cab ride) and you can pick almost any hotel. Even the furthest possible downtown hotel is barely over 1.5 miles away.

Getting to the hotel from the airport hasn't been covered yet - fixed price cabs are usually the most convenient way for typical cruisers (couples or families, with a large suitcase each) to reach a downtown hotel. Most of them are in the $31 Downtown zone; the handful very close to the pier are in the Canada Place $35 zone; and a couple (Westin Bayshore, Sylvia) right down the far end of the peninsula are in the Stanley Park $37 zone.

If your hotel is close enough to a Canada Line SkyTrain station for you to walk (many are within a few hundred yards), then that's likely even faster than a cab, and also cheaper for 3 or fewer people (4 can actually be cheaper by cab). Tickets run $9.20pp for adults on weekdays, $7.95 on weekends or evenings (>6:30pm), with further discounts for >65s and <14s.

Google maps will also show you transit schedules and station locations - the full schedules for buses and SkyTrain are available, so it's a one-stop shop for comparing any given hotels location to the pier and the airport.

Yes, there are three of us and it was cheaper to take the SkyTrain. So easy to use and the ride was quick. Very nice people to help if you have any questions. We used the kiosk right there at the platform to purchase our tickets and it was very self-explanatory.
