Civitavecchia to Rome Airport (FCO): How to Spend 6-Hour Gap

After cruise disembarkation, we have an approximately 6-hour gap before we need to be at the Rome airport (FCO) (approximately 3:30 p.m./15:30 hr). Any recommendations for low-key options in the port area? Perhaps storing luggage and walking around the port city, or taking a car-based excursion that would end at the airport? Thanks.

There's not much of interest in Civitavecchia (port city).

One option, if you want to look at private tour + transfer is to spend a few hours at Ostia Antica, the ancient Roman port city -- it's very close to FCO airport.

Another option would be to visit the Etruscan tombs and museum in Tarquinia.

I assume you are planning sufficient time into your schedule to be at the airport well in advance of your flight -- recommendations for those going to the US is to be there three hours ahead. Lines can get very long for check-in and security.

If you get a transfer from the ship at 9:30 am, then drive to the airport you may get there at 10:30 am. It could take longer depending how many others are on your transfer and where they are being dropped off (hotels, etc). That leaves 5 hours before you plane departs. We were just there and the lines can take a while, however, it went fairly smooth.

There are also the Etruscan necropolises at Cerveteri:  http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1158

I think the ruins at Ostia Antica are probably your best bet on that front, however, unless you have a particular interest in the Etruscans.

Alternatively, you could pick one of the lovely seaside restaurants in Fiumicino or Ostia and enjoy a leisurely last lunch in Italy before being faced with airline food.
