Age Demographic Question

It used to be easier to predict the demographics of a cruise based solely on the destination and the length of the voyage. The younger set would opt for the sun & fun cruises (still rocking their bikinis and speedos) as well as shorter voyages due to less vacation days. The Love Boat had a huge impact on creating demand for Caribbean cruises!  And while almost everyone new to cruising was interested in the cultural highlights of Europe and the elegance of the Riviera(s), you could still count on a younger crowd. Perhaps due to the popularity of the James Bond movies and Monte Carlo images on TV.

For these reasons most cruise lines focused on the Caribbean in Winter and the Med in Summer. Senior cruisers would opt for the more scenic cruises with sea days, such as the Panama Canal, Trans-Oceanics, Fall Foliage sailings (aka repositionings.)

The market has now expanded with more new cruisers every year, and more travelers who cruise frequently. Destinations the world over are now in demand as people of all ages seek the more exotic, unique and authentic experiences.

So it is hard to predict the age demographic of a particular upcoming voyage.

Of course, when comparing demographics across cruise lines, you have many many more factors that will impact a demographic: price point, inclusive v. pay as you go, marketing imagery, family focused v. not, etc. I'm recalling that 'back in the day' there were lines with famously flirtatious Italian or Greek officers, as well as gentlemen escorts onboard to dance with the ladies. Needless to say, these cruises were popular with a certain demographic, and by the way those lines had cabins specifically for singles. Now it is rare to find single cabins, and I agree there ought to be more available. (Sorry to hijack my own post!)

Anyway, there are just so many variables to consider, and yet it means there is a cruise line out there for everybody!

Bonnie, just FYI the new Saga cruise ship Spirit of Discovery is launching later this year and has about 100 solo cabins. It looks to be a beautiful and modern ship, very similar to the new Viking ships. The age range on Saga can be 40-80 years but the 40 year olds have to sail with someone who is 50+.

It has a Jools Holland speciality restaurant with live music which sounds very entertaining. I have booked a cruise on her for later in the year with other Azamara friends.

It may well become my second choice for favourite cruise line....after Azamara of course! 😄

Really...40’s have to sail with +50’s? Or are you pulling my leg?

I’ll have to do some research....not that I’m under the age limit :classic_rolleyes:

Hi Bonnie

Yes it’s true!

Saga is a UK based holiday company  offering land based, escorted holidays   and river and ocean cruises catering for  over the 50s. They have been based here in Kent UK for many years.
