Children's Passports - do I have enough time?

My three kid's passports expired. We are cruising on July 10th. I haven't renewed them yet and now I'm wondering if its too late. How long does it take for them to get to me. I don't want to send off the original birth certificates and when the cruise comes, I don't have either. Any advice?

Relax...you have plenty of time. Most of the reports I've seen lately say they're getting passports in 3-4 weeks. You still have over three months. icon_smile.gif

My wife's took about 5 weeks...something about them getting busy for the summer travel season. Anyway, you should still have plenty of time. For peace of mind, you could always pay the expedite fee.

Have a great cruise! icon_smile.gif

I can tell you honestly, you have plenty of time! We are sailing in May and i decided to get our daughters passports rather than mees around with birth certificates. We sent them off on Feb. 11 and they were back March 19. Godd luck!

I just applied for a passport and was told 25 business days. Was upset that they took my birth certificate, as I need it for May 2nd sailing on the Inspiration, so I just applied for another birth certificate in case it didn't come back in time. 25 business days will bring it to May 4th, hope to get it sooner.

If you are renewing passports, you would not have to send birth certificates

According to Carnival's documentation, an expired passport of less than 10 years is still acceptable.

United States citizens need at least one of the following

• A passport (valid or expired for less than 10 years)

This is NOT true! To renew a childs passport, you WILL need to submit a birth certificate.

However, it's also true unless the passport is required at any of your stops, an expired passport will work fine.

If the renewal is for a minor, the renewal application has to be in person, but I can't find any requirement that says they need a birth certificate. That's the point of the passport in the first place.

We sent in our passport applications last Friday and they told us it would be 3-6 weeks. Our cruise is July 11 so you should be ok for a july cruise also. Since my son in under 14, both my husband and I had to sign his passport application and both of us physically had to go to the post office to apply for his passport. Fortunately it was spring break so we all were home icon_smile.gif

Not.

The expiring passport does not show who the legal guardians are. That is the reason for the birth certificate. It lists who the parents are, and when both are present for the renewal process, you must even show ID.

If one parent is missing, you must have a consent form for the missing parent for the renewal.

Actually, my birth certificate shows who my parents are, not necessarily my legal guardians.

That will still work when your Mommy and Daddy renew your passport.

If you have other legal guardians, acceptable documents are:

Adoption Decree (with adopting parents’ names); or

Court Order Establishing Custody; or

Court Order Establishing Guardianship

Just a note for getting a child's passport. Not all birth certificates have the parents listed on them. None of my family had this. It is a new law that anyone under 15 must have a birth certificate with the parents name on it in order to apply for a passport. Me, my husband, and my 15 year old son were able to apply for our passports without our parents names on the birth certificate. My 12 year old daughter was not. I had to go to the town she was born in and pay $10 to get a new birth certificate for her.

Hi! I'm the original poster of this thread. I went to the Post Office that handles the passports and got the forms that I need. I was told that I HAD to send the original passports (even for renewal) and also, we all including hubby had to go to the post office and he and I have to show our I.D's in order to do this. The cost is $40.00 for passport and $30.00 to the post office for each child. If hubby doesn't come he has to write a consent letter for the passports. So, we are all off to the Post Office this week! Thanks everyone!

SORRY! I meant birth certificates not passports. They don't want the expired passports. (I Didn't have enough coffee this morning!)

We applied for my youngest daughters first passport on March 9th. Received it back today (postmarked 3/31/04) So... three weeks almost to the day?

FYI-when my MIL renewed her expired passport, they did make her send it in with the renewal fee.
